Organizational context

In pursue of UNHCR’s core solutions mandate, the mission of the RCPS is to ensure the sustainable and tangible expansion of third country solutions for persons in need of international protection globally. The RCPS works together with various actors to deliver the the Consultations on Resettlement and Complementary Pathways (CRCP), formerly known as the Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement (ATCR), in June 2024 which is a multilateral forum that brings together UNHCR, States, NGOs and refugees to discuss and advance resettlement and complementary pathways issues of common interest. The CRCP addresses current challenges relating to how we, as a global community, continue to deliver solutions to refugees.
To support the delivery of the CRCP, the RCPS is seeking an intern.

The position

The Protection Intern will assist the Resettlement and Complementary Pathways Service to deliver the CRCP in June 2024. The protection intern will also work closely with other colleagues within the service to ensure that the UNHCR CRCP digital platform is up to date. In addition, the Protection intern will work on smaller projects within the larger Resettlement Team.
The Protection Intern will function under the supervision of the Resettlement and Complementary Pathways Officer in the Resettlement Team under the RCPS.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Attend all pre CRCP virtual meetings, including Working group meetings.
• Support the preparations as well as follow-up on the CRCP meeting from 4-7 June 2024, including bilateral (governments-UNHCR) meetings which will take place in the margins of the CRCP.
• Responsibilities will include but not limited to within the CRCP process; note taking, drafting, document preparation, support drafting of the final report, logistics related to the CRCP event and managing the overall technical requirements for participants on a need basis.
• The intern is invited to also bring new ideas which could contribute to the CRCP process requiring an awareness of new developments within the resettlement and complementary process.
• Liaise with government officials, NGOs, refugees, and civil society as needed for the CRCP process.
• Liaise with other colleagues within the RCPS.
• Support with the design and presentation of content related to resettlement and complementary pathways as per the UNHCR CRCP Digital platform.
• Follow up with archiving of key content.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Desirable minimum qualifications and experience
The ideal candidate will have:

• University Degree
• Excellent computer and IT proficiency
• Good understanding of UNHCR policy and practice is an asset
• Good understanding of Resettlement is an asset
• Quick learner who is self-motivated, has a positive approach and eager to grow their capabilities (required)
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity (required).
• Lived experience of forced displacement is considered an asset, and applications of (former) refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced, returnees, and stateless people are encouraged.
• Excellent verbal and written skills, with a precise attention to detail (required)

Language requirements:

• Fluency in written and spoken English is essential
• Working knowledge of French would be an asset but is not essential

Location

The successful candidate will be based with the team in the UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Eligibility

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within two years of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.

*not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.

Conditions and Allowance

The internship is a full-time role with working hours from Monday to Friday. There will be one working weekend before the CRCP event in June 2024.
Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
