You will join the Mental Health & Behaviour Research Group, University of Rwanda to work on the UNITED for Health Project. UNITED for Health (formerly called BAHP Rwanda) is an initiative of the University of Rwanda in collaboration with the University College Leuven Limburg, Belgium on strengthening the links between NGOs and academia.

This project aims to create an academic platform where local and international NonGovernmental Organisations active in Rwandan health sector can meet and exchange. The project has three main components: 1. Create an online presence on the University of Rwanda (UR) website where all NGOs are listed and profiled and relevant information like training opportunities and funding opportunities are shared;2. Organize a yearly ‘Health NGO community day’ where students, academics Health NGOs can meet and learn; 3.Organize workshops for a limited number of participants on how to collaborate and attract funding to expand on their activities. The rationale for this project is twofold. International Health NGOs often bring a high level of technical expertise, but work in relative isolation and the expertise does not become locally embedded. On the other hand, local NGOs often work with limited funding, finding it difficult to grow. It is a longstanding request from these stakeholders that UR brings together students, academics and health NGOS around specific themes and well-defined goals.

 

 

DUTIES

 

• Reach out to NGOs in Rwanda working in the health sector, convincing and assisting them to be part of the UNITED for Health initiative
• Reach out to CMHS departmental staff to concretely follow up on opportunities
• Be the main organiser of the UNITED for Health day that will be combined with the CMHS Exhibition day.
• Actively participate in scientific paper writing and other publications related to the study
• Manage the UNITED for Health website, updating with new information and adding new features
• Manage a professional research and training email list
• Create content for UNITED for Health workshops
• Serve as the point person for administrative and financial reporting tasks linked to the project
• Write professional reports on different activities
• Write professional emails
• You may also be required to carry out such other duties, commensurate with the grading of the post, as may be assigned by the supervisors or their nominees.

 

 

PROFILE

 

 

You have a strong interest in health research and community engagement. You are outgoing and can easily and professionally interact with NGO actors and academic staff. You can organise complicated events with multiple stakeholders. You are apt in reporting professionally and keep an overview. Most importantly, you are someone who delivers. When a task is given to you, you will make sure to complete it to the highest standards, no matter what it takes. You have excellent interpersonal skills, are self-motivated and can flourish in a fast-paced environment, where timelines can often be unpredictable. You also have good written and oral communication skills (in English and Kinyarwanda), and can effectively communicate internally and externally.

 

You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Health or Social Work, and 1 year of relevant professional experience. You are focused on developing your professional skills and working in Health development. You thrive in an innovative and collaborative organization.

You will join the Mental Health & Behaviour Research Group, University of Rwanda to work on the COSTAR (Community-based Sociotherapy Adapted for Refugees) Project. Community-based sociotherapy (CBS) is intended as an inclusive, non-stigmatising, scalable community-based intervention to promote community connection and individual wellbeing.

 

The overall objectives of the COSTAR Project are as follows: Adapt Community-Based Sociotherapy (CBS) and related assessment measures for use with Congolese refugees in Rwanda and Uganda; Conduct a randomised controlled trial evaluating the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of adapted CBS (aCBS) for reducing depressive symptoms in Congolese refugees in Rwanda and Uganda. Develop implementation guidance for adapting and disseminating aCBS for refugees across diverse settings in conjunction with Community Based Sociotherapy Rwanda and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees You will have a strong mental health background. You should have experience in technical design of research projects, data analysis, statistical techniques and coding using SPSS, Stata, Python and NVivo). Report writing; drawing insight from data and presenting them.

 

You will have experience of working with communities in low-resource settings and/or low and middle-income countries. Ideally you will have experience of working on randomised controlled trials. Prior experience working with Congolese refugees will be an advantage.

 

DUTIES

 

• Work on technical research projects- supporting the design of research instruments and research designs, conducting a quantitative and qualitative analysis, drafting sections of reports and keeping teams updated on progress.
• Serve as point person for Community Engagement and lead documentation of lessons learned
• Actively participate in scientific paper writing and other publications related to the study
• Serve as the focal person for cost-effectiveness of adapted CBS (aCBS) for reducing depressive symptoms in Congolese refugees in Rwanda.
• Assist team members undertaking qualitative fieldwork with Congolese refugee communities based in Rwanda
• Assist to recruit and consent eligible people from Congolese refugee communities in Rwanda.
• Participate in a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) evaluating the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of aCBS for addressing depressive symptomatology experienced by Congolese refugees.
• Support field teams to administer assessments to participants in the cRCT at three separate time-points: baseline, post-baseline and post-baseline.
• You may also be required to carry out such other duties, commensurate with the grading of the post, as may be assigned by the supervisors or their nominees.

You have a Master’s or PhD in Mental Health/Psychology, Statistics, or Public Health, and 1 year of relevant professional experience. You are proficient in analysing data in Stata or similar statistical software. You are focused on developing your professional skills and working in Mental Health development. You thrive in an innovative and collaborative organization.
