The Science Without Boarders Challenge is an international contest that engages students and teachers in ocean conservation through art. This annual competition inspires students to be creative while promoting public awareness of the need to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans and aquatic resources, contributing to the overarching goals of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation.
Theme
The theme for this year’s 10th annual Science without Borders Challenge is “Ridge to Reef.”
According to the theme, this year the challenge is to create a piece of art that illustrates one or more actions that governments, non-profits, park managers, and indigenous communities can take to preserve coral reefs using a ridge to reef approach to conservation.
Prizes
Winners of the challenge will get the following awards:
- 1st Place: $500
- 2nd Place: $350
- 3rd Place: $200
Nevertheless, all participants will get recognization for their work with a certificate.
Eligibility
- This international art competition is open to all students 11-19 years old.
- Students must be in primary or secondary school, or the home school equivalent.
- College and university students are not eligible for this contest.
Judgement of the work and prizes will be among two categories based on age:
- Students 11-14 years old
- Students 15-19 years old
Judging
Judgement of the artwork is based on the quality of the artwork, originality, and adherence to the theme. The judges will also judge them on the following basis:
- relation of artist’s statement and the contest theme
- piece showing the amount of understanding of art
- use art elements, such as line, shape, form, value, composition, and colour to effectively portray the theme
- the neatness of the artwork
- also, the artwork is judged on the level in which it invokes emotion for viewers
Contest Rules & Information
- There is no fee to enter the contest.
- Submissions must be made online. Furthermore, Email submissions are not valid.
- Proof of age, identity, and/or eligibility may be required.
- All artwork must be an original work by the contestant.
- Do not submit artwork that you have entered into another art competition.
- Also, digitally created artwork, including photographs, are not accepted.
- Group submissions are not permitted.
- Participants may submit only 1 art piece.
- All participants must provide parent/guardian and teacher contact information.
- In addition, all participants who are 11-12 years old require Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Forms. You should submit the form online.
- Semi-finalists should mail the original artwork to be eligible to win the Science Without Borders Challenge. Furthermore, you will not get the original artwork in return.
- The competition forbids nudity or explicit content in the artwork.
- Entries that do not comply with all of the contest rules will be disqualified.
- The organiser will contact all winners and their parents/guardians and teachers before the Foundation announces the winning entries.
- Moreover, the organisers can use all submissions to promote the Science Without Borders Challenge, education, ocean conservation, and the work of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation in all media worldwide in perpetuity.
