The Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program expands on Mongabay’s long-running internship program, which has aided in boosting environmental journalists’ abilities in an area where such experience may be challenging.

Numerous aspiring journalists in more than a dozen nations have received training and hands-on reporting experience via the program since it began in 2008. Interns from Mongabay have pursued jobs as professional journalists and communicators for research institutes, environmental NGOs, and Mongabay itself.

Up to 12 fellows may be supported annually by the Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program, with six working at their English international bureau and six at Mongabay-Latam, their Spanish-language bureau. There will be three fellows in each bureau in each cohort. Fellows will enhance their environmental reporting abilities, collaborate with various editors at their global news outlet, and build a portfolio of unique stories to help them progress in their media careers.

Benefits of the Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship

• Each fellow will receive USD 500 monthly or 3,000 for the six-month fellowship. Fellows will collaborate closely with the fellowship editor over that period to produce six pieces.
• Fellows will get to work with various Mongabay editors, including those with diverse areas of expertise.

Eligibility Criteria 

All applicants should meet these criteria:

• As defined by the World Bank, applicants must be from a tropical nation with a low- to upper-middle income. Tropical “high-income” nations like Singapore and Australia are not eligible for the fellowship. You may see a list of the countries that qualify here
• Candidates must be aspiring environmental journalists in their early careers.
• The ability to work remotely is required, as is a weekly commitment of 10 hours.
• No formal education is necessary to apply for the program. No university is associated with the fellowship.
• It is necessary to submit all application materials in the required language (English for the English-language program and Spanish for the Spanish-language program).

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will consider the following criteria

• Basic familiarity with and enthusiasm for news reporting and writing.
• Showed an interest in environmental concerns.
• Exhibited a career interest in environmental journalism.
• A track record of communication.
• Ability to complete all fellowship requirements and reporting schedules.
