Salvo Grima Group is a dynamic group of companies specializing in distribution, ship supply, retail and wholesale. Established in 1860 in Malta, Europe, and now employs over 250 in seven countries, is seeking a talented Data Engineer to join our growing BA & Data team.
We are a forward-thinking company with a strong commitment to data-driven decision-making. Our current infrastructure consists of the ERPs, Dynamics Business Central and Navision, Power BI for reporting visualisations and Mulesoft to integrate systems via API. Excitingly, we are in the process of transitioning our data warehouse to Azure Databricks, opening new avenues for innovation and growth.
About the Role
The candidate will be based in our offices in Kigali where one of our subsidiaries, Salvo Grima Rwanda (SGR), was established in 2020, and today employs over 90 team members. SGR is a distribution company and represents a growing number of world-leading manufacturers including Unilever, Danone, British American Tobacco, and Mars Wrigley.
The ideal candidate for this role is a team player, with strong analytical skills and will be capable of working with large datasets. He/she will be proficient in data governance, modelling, data warehousing concepts and will be responsible, for building, collecting, organizing, and analysing data to help inform business decisions integrate data from different system to our current ERP system. He/she would be expected to design and build data models and work with stakeholders to identify and define the needs and objectives of the business, to help create solutions to meet those needs.
Responsibilities
- Build and Maintain a Trusted Data Warehouse: Create and maintain an efficient and trustworthy data warehouse that serves as the backbone of our data-driven operations.
- Design and Implement Scalable Data Pipelines: Utilize Mulesoft and later databricks to design and build highly scalable data pipelines tailored to specific business use cases.
- Enforce Software Development Best Practices: Ensure the adherence to software development best practices, including robust monitoring and effective debugging techniques.
- Collaborate with BI Developers: Work closely with the BI developers to continually enhance our data processes and develop innovative data solutions that drive business growth.
- Collaborate with other business units: Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. As a Data Engineer, you will have a unique opportunity to work closely with various business units across the organization.
Qualifications/Experience
- Communication Skills: Excellent English and Kinyarwanda communication skills, both written and verbal are a must.
- Previous Relevant Experience: Proven experience in a similar role is essential.
- Data Modelling Expertise: The ability to design and build data models that enhance data accessibility, proficiency, and quality.
- Real-time Data Processing: Experience in creating real-time data processes.
- ETL Pipeline Development: Proficiency in designing and developing ETL data pipelines and coordinating data processes.
- SQL Mastery: Advanced knowledge of SQL, including complex query design, with a keen interest in continuous learning.
- Programming Skills: Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or Scala.
- Problem-Solving Aptitude: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Adaptability: The ability to be flexible and manage changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Team Player: Collaborative mindset and a proven ability to work effectively within a team.
- Positive Attitude: A positive mindset and a can-do attitude that fuels innovation and growth.
- Educational Background: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant technical area.
