HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT (HSE) OFFICER (1 position)

Reporting relationship

The Health, Safety and Environment Officer reports to the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Coordinator and conducts frequent collaboration with Site Human Resources Officer (HRO).

Job summary / overview

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer is responsible for ensuring that the workplace complies with all health, safety, and environmental standards and regulations. The HSE Officer works to minimize risks, prevent accidents, and promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship. This includes conducting regular inspections, training employees, monitoring compliance, and implementing corrective measures to address potential hazards. The HSE Officer is a key player in safeguarding the well-being of employees, protecting the environment, and maintaining operational continuity through effective HSE management.

Role & position responsibilities (Duties and Functions)

HSE Compliance and Monitoring

  • Ensure compliance with local and international safety and environmental regulations, including mining-specific standards.
  • Conduct routine site inspections, hazard assessments, and audits to monitor adherence to HSE protocols.
  • Enforce company HSE standards and implement integrated SHE policies for all drilling operations.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation

  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with heavy drilling equipment, high-pressure systems, explosives (if applicable), and chemical exposure.
  • Conduct baseline and task-specific risk assessments, implementing necessary safety controls.
  • Provide oversight of daily drill crew operations, ensuring compliance with safety practices.

 Incident and Accident Management

  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, focusing on root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintain detailed records and prepare reports for regulatory authorities and senior management.

Training and Awareness

  • Deliver training on equipment safety, chemical handling, emergency response, and site-specific safety documentation (e.g., Job Safety Analysis and Safety Task Assignments).
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks tailored to mining and drilling activities to reinforce safety protocols.
  • Promote safety awareness campaigns focused on mining-related risks.

 Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and regularly test emergency response plans for site-specific scenarios, such as spills, fires, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Ensure readiness and maintenance of emergency equipment, including rescue tools and firefighting systems.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Monitor the site’s environmental impact, focusing on waste management, groundwater protection, and air quality control.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental laws related to drilling and mining activities, such as land rehabilitation and chemical containment.
  • Support sustainability initiatives and liaise with local communities to address environmental concerns.

 Documentation and Reporting

  • Compile HSE files and prepare weekly and monthly reports with detailed HSE statistics for management and regulators.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and corrective measures.
  • Document compliance with safety and environmental standards.

 Required Education, Work experience, Qualities and Skills

  • A Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, or related fields.
  • At least 3 years in Safety and Health function within a mining environment, drilling operations or similar roles with hands-on experience in high-risk, remote environments.
  • Strong understanding of mining-specific hazards (e.g., vibration, noise, and dust exposure).
  • Knowledge of lithium extraction risks, such as chemical handling (e.g., lithium hydroxide) and water contamination prevention.
  • Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety.
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills for managing diverse site teams.
