Job purpose:

The work involves delivering basic practice nursing services as well as helping the youth to recover from the acute Physical diseases, mental distress and enduring emotional issues or mental illness to maximize their life potential.

Supported by the ASYV senior nurse and the medical doctor within the practice, the nurse will deliver care within the boundaries of her/his role, focusing upon supporting patients to be healthy, monitoring of long-term conditions (eg. HIV/AIDS, diabetes, epilepsy, ect), providing nursing care, health prevention and screening activities.

He/she will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures, and providing nurse leadership. The nurse will liaise with other health professionals (senior nurse, medical doctors, social workers) to plan and deliver care using a multidisciplinary patient-centered approach.

Key responsibilities and functions:

  • Caring and empathetic for patients experiencing physical/medical problem and acute mental distress or chronic mental illness
  • Responsible for his/her written clinical evaluation of children
  • Assessing and talking to patients about their problems and discussing the best way to plan and deliver their care
  • Build relationships with kids and their caregivers to encourage trust, while listening and interpreting their needs and concerns
  • Ensuring the correct administration of medication, including injections, and monitoring the results of treatment
  • Responding to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempting to understand the source of distress
  • Observes patient, records and reports the patients’ conditions and behavior
  • Provide health education to children and staff members
  • Producing care plans and risk assessment for individual patients; preparing and maintaining patient records
  • Fostering communication between patients, family mothers, and social workers as well as attending meetings to review and monitor progress when necessary
  • Responsible for  assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and follow up care plans of the kids; Promoting health and well being, and prevent adverse effects
  • Identify and manage as appropriate, treatment plans for patients at risk of developing an infectious ailment, chronic and/or long-term condition
  • Prioritize health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent, emergency situation including initiation of effective emergency care
  • Refer out patients to appropriate hospitals or specialists; internal health professional
  • Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that encourage patients to live healthily, and encourage principles of self-care
  • Assuring adequate maintenance of the medical materials and other clinic material/equipment
  • Utilize and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment
  • Produce and submit reports of his/her scope of work according to departmental requirements
  • Required to live in the Village and work every other weekend alternating with his/her colleague
  • Perform any other duty as assigned by the supervisor.

Required qualifications, abilities & skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in general nursing from an accredited University in Rwanda. Equivalence will be required for credentials acquired from Universities outside of Rwanda.
  • 7-10 years work experience as a practicing nurse in a clinical setting
  • Having an experience in handling medical emergencies, especially trauma-related cases
  • Having a valid license issued by the National Council of Nurses and Midwives
  • Having knowledge of modern methods, techniques and procedures used in general nursing and medical protocols approved by the  Ministry of Health
  • Well-rounded knowledge of practices, equipment, and legislation of the Rwandan Health System
  • A naturally caring and empathetic approach to the youth population
  • Communication, collaboration, organizational and administrative skills
  • Fluent in Kinyarwanda and English
  • Desire to constantly learn and improve professional knowledge and abilities
  • Ability to prioritize and work well under stress and meet deadlines
