
Apply Now: Story Grants to Report on Great Apes and One Health in Africa — Up to $1,500 + Mentorship: (Deadline 4 June, 2025)
The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is offering story grants of up to US$1,500 to support the production of in-depth stories on the threats facing great apes—including gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and orangutans—and the conservation strategies that aim to protect them.
Through the new project Empowering Media for the Conservation of Great Apes in Africa, up to 8 grants will be awarded to journalists to highlight the complex relationship between great apes, disease, habitat threats, and human health, especially within the One Health framework that links environmental, animal, and human well-being.
This initiative is supported by the Arcus Foundation.
Story Themes
Story proposals may explore, but are not limited to:
- Disease threats to both wild and captive apes and their drivers (e.g., tourism, trafficking, industrial development)
- Zoonotic spillover and the One Health approach at the human-ape interface
- Community-based, ethical, and science-backed conservation efforts
- Legal and policy frameworks supporting (or failing) great ape conservation
- Protected areas and Indigenous knowledge in habitat preservation
- Impact of extractive industries on ape habitats amid climate and energy transitions
Stories with innovative angles, cross-border collaborations, or coverage of underreported topics are highly encouraged.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Reside in an African great ape range country
- Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, DRC, Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda
- Submit proposals in English or French
- Work in any media format: online, print, radio, or TV
- Be freelance or affiliated with a media outlet
- Submit a letter of editorial support, two work samples, and a budget proposal
Groups of journalists are welcome to apply, but one person must serve as the lead applicant.
Special encouragement is given to women, Indigenous, rural, and early-career journalists.
What You’ll Receive
- Up to US$1,500 in reporting funds (covers travel, stipends, translation, etc.)
- Editorial mentorship from experienced journalists
- Training on repackaging stories for social media audiences
- Rights to publish in your outlet and wider distribution via EJN/Arcus
- Published stories must credit: “This story was produced with support from Internews’ Earth Journalism Network.”

- A letter of support from your editor confirming publication by October 31, 2025
- Two story samples or links to relevant past work
