Scholarship Description:
Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) – Netherlands is open for International Students . Also, the scholarship allows Masters level programs in the field of All Subjects excluding LLM taught at Leiden University . The deadline of the scholarship is 1st Feb/ 1st Oct.
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program (LExS) is offered for excellent Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree program. Also, it is for excellent students from all nationalities enrolling in a Master of Law Advanced Program or MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy.

Eligible Nationalities:
Study program requirements
- Applicants for all Master’s program at Leiden University – with the exception of LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.
Nationality requirements
- For non-EEA/non-EFTA* nationals who are applying for a Master’s program at Leiden University. See additional note for UK students below.
- Furthermore, for students of all nationalities applying for an LLM Advanced Studies program, or the MSC in International Relations and Diplomacy.
- Also, EEA/EFTA: All EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland
Additional note for UK students
- If there is no deal specifying otherwise, after Brexit day, UK citizens will be required to pay the same tuition fee as non-EEA/non-EFTA students. Moreover, if this occurs, UK students will become eligible for the LExS. With this in mind, UK nationals are now permitted to apply for the LExS for study programs beginning in February 2021. However, in the event of a deal, LExS applications from UK nationals will be cancelled.
Scholarship Benefits:
The LExS awards for the duration of the study program. There are three available levels of awards:
- € 10,000 of the tuition fee
- Also, € 15,000 of the tuition fee
- Likewise, total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
The LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.
Eligibility Criteria:
Students must have achieved excellent study results in their previous education, this being relevant to the Master’s program for which they are applying. As an indication, the student is amongst the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study program. Also, applicants must have a non non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and may not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans. Additionally, all EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland)
