Applications are open for the Alan Hagman Photojournalism Grant 2022. The Alan Hagman grant is offered annually to facilitate projects ranging from human rights to environmental issues. A creative approach to important stories that might otherwise go untold is highly valued.

The Hagman Grant is named for the late Los Angeles Times photo editor who served as a mentor and championed the work of photojournalists throughout his career. The Alan Hagman Grant is supported by donations from Alan’s family, friends and the photojournalism community.

Alan Hagman Photojournalism Grant

  • NPPF will pay $5,000 upon award of Alan Hagman Grant.
  • All taxes and expenses are the responsibility of the recipient of The Alan Hagman Grant. The recipient must provide a U.S. Taxpayer Identification number upon acceptance of the grant.

Eligibility for Alan Hagman Photojournalism Grant

  • Open to professional photojournalists who are current residents of the United States.
  • Staff photographers are eligible but must arrange time off from their employer to complete the project.

Expectation

  • The recipient will do their best to adhere to the project timeline and communicate their progress with NPPF’s coordinator on a monthly basis. It is expected that the project will be completed within one year of the grant agreement.
  • The recipient may seek advice and recommendations from NPPF as the recipient deems useful. The NPPF Board is committed to supporting the grantee to create a powerful and memorable result that meets the highest standards of contemporary journalism and storytelling.
  • Upon conclusion of the project, Alan Hagman Grant recipient will submit to NPPF sufficient high-resolution images with comprehensive captions to document the grant. If the project results in a video, a high-resolution copy must be submitted.
  • A written document outlining work on the grant is required.
  • The Alan Hagman grantee  is encouraged to write or collaborate with a writer to produce a story to accompany the work in the tradition of “words and pictures.” NPPF will provide assistance if requested.

  • A résumé and statement of purpose.
  • A proposed timeline and plan for completing your project
  • A portfolio of still pictures, picture stories and/or videos
