The Ontario Legislature Internship Programme (OLIP) was established in 1975 and is administered by the Canadian Political Science Association and supported by a financial grant from the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. OLIP is a non-partisan organization and is not associated with the Government of Ontario nor with any political party.

Each year, ten interns are selected from across Canada through a highly competitive process. The internship takes place in Toronto, Ontario beginning in September and concluding in June. The Programme is open to Canadian citizens and those who are eligible to work in Canada who hold at least one university degree. OLIP is an equal opportunity programme.

Aim and Benefits of CPSA Ontario Legislature Internship program

The Ontario Legislature Internship Programme runs from September 1st to June 30th each year. It is a paid internship, with ten interns receiving about $27,000 in stipends with additional payments upon completion of a draft and final version of an academic paper. The Programme is designed to provide backbench Members of Provincial Parliament with highly qualified members of their team.

Requirements for CPSA Ontario Legislature Internship program Qualification

ELIGIBILITY:

OLIP open to all candidates who, at the start of the internship:

  • Hold Canadian citizenship, or Permanent Residency, and are eligible to work in Canada;
  • Hold at least one university degree;
  • Are available to work full-time from September to June.

Interview date, Process and Venue for CPSA Ontario Legislature Internship program

The Ontario Legislature Interns are chosen through a rigorous process based on academic excellence, personal maturity and a demonstrated interest in parliamentary government. The minimum requirement for a position as an Intern is a university undergraduate degree and an interest in and a knowledge of Ontario politics. See below for full eligibility requirements.

You must have graduated in the last two years to participate in OLIP.

The Ontario Legislature Internship Programme is a nonpartisan programme. What is nonpartisanship? Nonpartisanship means not being affiliated with a political party, or publicly endorsing positions on matters of public policy. Since OLIP interns will work with both government and opposition MPPs, they are expected to remain politically neutral in a variety of political settings.

Prior partisan activity may make your application ineligible.

Documents Required for Application

The application requires the following:

  • A letter to the Academic Director explaining why you would like to be an intern. (600 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Transcript (Official or Unofficial)
  • Three References – we recommend two academic references and one other. You will need to provide email addresses for your referees. They will be asked to upload their letter to an online system. Two of the three references must be received by February 7 in order for your application to be considered complete.
