JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
BACKGROUND
The University of Rwanda is a Public Institution of Higher Learning committed to support the development of the country through the generation and advancement of knowledge and innovation among other core activities. The University of Rwanda through the Single Project Implementation Unit (UR-SPIU) is implementing a
research project, “Sugira Muryango: Scaling Out a Father-Engaged Family Home Visiting Intervention”. The project is led by College of Medicine and Health Sciences-Centre for Mental
Health, in partnership with Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW) –
Research Program on Children and Adversity (RPCA). This is a Capacity Building
Program to enhance research and training in the area of child development and
family functioning. The “Sugira Muryango” project is dedicated to improving the
evidence base of understanding risk and protective factors influencing mental
health, child development, and family functioning as well as intervention research
to develop and test behavioural interventions for children and families affected by
multiple forms of adversity, poverty, domestic Violence, intimate partner violence
and infectious diseases.
Position: Capacity Building Research Assistant (1 POSITION)
You will work on the Sugira Muryango Project at the University of Rwanda Centre
for Mental Health-College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Sugira Muryango
Project is being implemented in partnership with Research Program on Children
and Adversity (RPCA), a research Program at the Boston College School of Social
Work (BCSSW) dedicated to improving the evidence base of understanding risk and
protective factors influencing mental health, child development, and family
functioning as well as intervention research to develop and test behavioural
interventions for children and families affected by multiple forms of adversity,
including armed conflict, poverty, and infectious disease.
The post will run from March 2022 to Feb 2023. You will be employed through the
University of Rwanda and working collaboratively with Capacity Building Manager
and supervised by the in-country Principal Investigator, and Director of the Centre
for Mental Health at the University of Rwanda (UOR) in building institutional
research capacity on violence prevention, gender, and early child development;
build skills to enhance scholarly outputs; and, improve the use of technology to
extend implementation science toward the sustainment of evidence based
interventions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist to coordinate with colleagues to ensure delivery on work package
embedded process evaluation, ensuring that the work stream runs
smoothly, on time and within budget.
2. Specifically, you will:
a. Support to develop and deliver innovative and locally relevant training and
technical assistance programs to increase (i) the regional knowledge base
and capacity for implementation research, (ii) the use of science-based
methods for developing programs, (iii) the use of rigorous evaluation
methods to measure program effectiveness, (iv) father engagement in order
to reduce family violence and (v) accelerate efforts to scale up evidencebased programs in Rwanda.
b. Provide support to existing thematic writing groups of junior faculties who
are preparing manuscripts, writing grants, and analysing data.
c. Assist to determine needs and locate appropriate training, distance
learning, and webinars for dissemination using the smart room.
d. Supporting to liaise between UR faculty/students and existing
organizations and government stakeholders in Rwanda to enhance the
uptake of translational research in Rwanda led by local investigators.
3. Support the process of obtaining relevant ethical approvals in Rwanda for
the implementation of the Sugira Muryango Project.
4. Assist to prepare information and reports for internal and external
communication as required.
5. You may also be required to carry out such other duties, commensurate
with the grading of the post, as may be assigned by the supervisors or
their nominees.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
The position requires a qualified, experienced and highly motivated research
assistant with relevant field and functional experience. The minimal requirements
include:
a) A masters in Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Applied Statistics, or
similar field OR an Undergraduate Degree in the same field with three years
of work experience.
b) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
c) Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to perform and
collaborate under challenging conditions
d) Self-starter with experience taking initiative and working both independently
and as team.
e) Demonstrated experience working in academic and research institutions
f) Strong planning, community mobilization, and inter-cultural communication
skills required
g) Demonstrated experience in administrative related work
h) Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and
Kinyarwanda.
