Role: Clinical Psychologist

Reports to: Lead Psychologist

Target Start Date: September 2023

Umuzabibu Mwiza is a non-profit Christian ministry committed to empowering more than 200 at-risk women in northern Rwanda. Umuzabibu Mwiza envisions Africa’s most vulnerable people transformed into healthy, prosperous and collaborative communities of social change through Jesus Christ. Our social business model addresses the generational cycle of poverty by uniting work-based solutions with holistic care programs. In addition to fair, salaried wages, all of the women working for Handspun Hope receive regular onsite mental health counseling, family healthcare, child education scholarships, spiritual mentorship and more.

The majority of the women working for Handspun Hope have experienced trauma in their lifetime, whether it be due to poverty, homelessness, marginalization, hunger or the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The Clinical Psychologist should be passionate about serving women with trauma by developing and maintaining programs which support financial, emotional, social and spiritual development.

Accountability

The Clinical Psychologist is a full-time position which reports directly to the Lead Psychologist within the wellness team. They conduct ongoing individual and group therapy sessions in order to aid in the trauma healing process of the employees. The Clinical Psychologist maintains the organization’s Christian values by implementing biblical components including prayer into the psychosocial counseling.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular psychological and behavioral screening/assessments, evaluation, develop intervention plans, referrals and consultation for clients.
  • Schedule and conduct individual and group/family psychotherapy sessions to address mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, sexual violence and general family issues (e.g. family conflicts) in order to modify behavior and/or improve personal, social and emotional adjustment of residents.
  • Work with clients to set goals, develop a treatment plan, and experience the desired change through treatment.
  • Examine and plan interventions to address social and environmental issues/factors that may influence clients’ mental well-being, substance abuse, peer pressure, family dysfunction, financial challenges and health issues.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of counseling or treatments for employees as well as the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses, then adjust intervention or treatment plans as necessary.
  • Consult with case managers to determine appropriate intervention strategies to meet employees’ physical and emotional needs and relevant therapy/counseling techniques. This includes participating with and/or assisting case managers and relevant staff to implement and achieve case goals and support beneficiaries towards successful families.
  • Prepare and deliver training content through the Ibyiringiro Institute for community leaders to learn trauma counseling techniques.
  • Facilitate debrief sessions with staff members.
  • Establish, update, and maintain a record keeping system for confidential records including questionnaires, histories, critical incidents, therapy notes, and reports.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Country Director.

Qualifications

  • Considering the spiritual foundation of Umuzabibu Mwiza, the candidate should be of mature Christian faith and prepared to conduct biblically-led counseling.
  • A bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology, counseling, mental health. Registration with a licensing body is an added advantage. A non-registered candidate will be required to pursue registration.
  • 3 or more years of relevant experience in psycho-social counseling, psychotherapy or mental health.
  • Experience working with at-risk individuals including people with HIV+, widows, orphans or the economically disadvantaged.
  • Knowledge of case management is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to establish a home base in Musanze, Rwanda.

Intervention Skills

  • Utilizing principles and techniques of counseling session interviews and recording.
  • Utilizing diagnostic tools, assessments, and manuals.
  • Implementing counseling and psychotherapy intervention strategies and techniques.
  • Exhibiting understanding of community structures and services.
