Since two years, countries in the ESA region have experienced an alarming increase in the number of new, or re-emerging humanitarian emergencies, including public health (including Ebola, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever, yellow fever, wild poliovirus, and Cholera), armed conflicts and natural disasters emergencies.
UNICEF ESAR has prioritized the critical need to support countries to rapidly scale up capacity to prevent, mitigate, and manage ongoing and anticipated emergencies as well as to enhance capacity for preparedness and response to these emergencies.
Purpose
The purpose of this external announcement is to attract suitable Youth and Adolescent Development Specialist candidates interested in working in any of the countries within UNICEF’s East and Southern Africa region to respond to emergencies for the next 36 months. Education-
-
- Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, Government, Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Policy, Social Development, Community Development, or a field relevant to international development assistance in Adolescents development and participation.
Work Experience-
- Five of relevant professional work experience. Experience working in the UN or other international development organization.
- Field work experience.
- Background/familiarity with Emergency.
- Experience in monitoring gender disparities and in programme interventions that reduce these disparities an asset
Language Requirement:-
- Fluency in verbal and written English or French (depending on the country office’s official language). Knowledge of another UN language or a local language is an asset
Specialized skills/technical knowledge/experience
- Policy and Programming for EiE, including preparedness, response, risk reduction, resilience, Data, monitoring and reporting,
- Capacity building, multi-country trainings, and technical support in EiE,
- Knowledge management on EiE, including the documentation of good practice and lessons learned,
- Advanced analytical, communication and writing skills in English, including drafting concise documents based on the review of multiple information sources,
- Developing high quality resources and presentations for various audiences,
- Ability to work remotely and independently

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Appointments are also subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
