The strategic partnership between The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and IHE Delft Institute for Water Education aims to tackle the world’s water and sanitation crisis by increasing the number of trained professionals to devise, plan, and implement solutions in developing and emerging countries. Through this partnership, scholarships are awarded annually for graduate students at IHE Delft’s campus in the Netherlands.

These scholarships are designed to promote long-term productive relationships between Rotarians and highly skilled water and sanitation professionals in their communities. Since the inception of the partnership in 2012, over 165 scholarships have been awarded.

Aim and Benefits of IHE Delft Rotary Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals

Total cost of each scholarship is € 33,578 ( @0,91 equals $ 36,900).

The local Rotary Club is encouraged to financially contribute to the Global Grant. Preferably $ 5.000 or at least an amount that can be carried by the club.

The club is also encouraged to obtain a District Designated Fund (DDF) contribution via their district Foundation Committee. Again preferably $ 5,000. or any other amount the Committee can make available.

Finally, in some cases students themselves contribute to their own scholarship. Any amount up to about $ 3,000 would help to get the scholarship fully financed.

The sponsor completes the Rotary club/district portion of the application and submits it to rotary.ihescholarship@gmail.com, no later than 15th April 2024, together with the student’s resume and the IHE Delft admission letter. Any nomination forms submitted after this date will not be considered.

Requirements for IHE Delft Rotary Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals Qualification

Rotary seeks scholars who wish to use their expertise to improve the lives of others in their own communities and around the world.

Scholars will be expected to maintain good academic performance and participate in the following activities:

• Provide a monthly update on the educational program and their cultural experiences to Rotarian sponsors in their home country.

• Give at least one presentation at a Rotary club or district event in the Netherlands.

• Give at least one presentation at a Rotary district conference in their home country.

Selected students are encouraged to return to their home country, work with Rotarian sponsors on an activity to make a positive impact on water andsanitation in their home community.

Note: Rotarians, spouses or lineal descendants of Rotarians, or employees of a club, district, or other Rotary entity are not eligibleto apply.

Interview date, Process and Venue for IHE Delft Rotary Scholarships for Water and Sanitation Professionals

The Rotary/IHE Delft committee then reviews the nomination and decides whether it is willing to support the Global Grant for a scholarship at IHE Delft. Focus of the review is the demonstration of the candidate to have the potential to make a significant, positive impact on global water and sanitation issues during their career. Furthermore, the track record of the local sponsoring Rotary Club in WASH-projects and the plans for the IHE Delft-student upon return to his/her country will be taken into consideration as well.

5. In case of a successful nomination, a Global Grant application will be initiated with The Rotary Foundation to fund the scholarship. The Rotary/IHE Delft committee will assign a host Rotary Club in the Netherlands and will assist in funding and completion of the Global Grant. 6. The scholar submits a progress report after the scholar’s first year of the program and a final report when the scholar completes the academic program.

The application process is as follows: Rotarians interview and select from local candidates who have already been academically admitted at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education’s MSc Programme in Water and Sustainable Development, to one of the following thematic tracks:

  • Water and Health
  • Water, Food and Energy
  • Water Resources and Ecosystems Health
  • Water Hazards, Risks and Climate

When the candidate is deemed suitable, the sponsoring Rotary Club submits (together with the candidate) a fully completed application form to the joint Rotary/IHE Delft selection committee (details can be found below), copied to the District Governor and District Rotary Foundation Chair of their district.

When a Rotary scholarship has been awarded, the sponsoring Rotary Clubs maintains contact with the scholar throughout his or her studies. The financing of the successful candidates will be managed through Rotary’s Global Grant process.

Application procedure:

  1. Apply for admission for the IHE Delft Master program in Water and Sustainable Development by 1 April 2024 at the latest
  2. Early on in the application process, search for your nearest Rotary club
  3. Approach the club and request to nominate you for a Rotary scholarship
  4. The application form needs to be completed by you and by the Rotary Club
  5. After full completion of the form, the sponsoring Rotary Club submits your application to the Rotary/IHE Delft selection committee in The Netherlands by 15 April 2024 at the latest
  6. After the selection all candidates will be informed about the outcome before 15 May 2024
  7. Final approval is pending formal endorsement by The Rotary Foundation 1 July 2024
