INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT One Acre Fund : Rwanda Extension Department Intern : ( Deadline : 03 June 2019 )
Extension department is a department at One Acre Fund/TUBURA with a mandate of delivering services to farmers in Rwanda through One Acre Fund – RAB partnership. Currently, extension department consist of Twigire Muhinzi program, the Twigire Muhinzi program deliver many services including trees distribution to farmers. Twigire Muhinzi Program consists of 14,200 farmer Promoters located at each village and all agriculture agents in agriculture services in Rwanda. Extension department train FPs on good agricultural practices and Fps train farmers from their villages. Since 2018, One Acre Fund in partnership with RAB started distributing of trees to farmers. More than 6.4 Million agroforestry trees and 40,000 fruits were distributed to farmers. After having good experience of trees distribution in 2018, we are excited to continue this partnership in 2019.
Roles and responsibilities
In 2018, all distributed trees were produced from 4 central nurseries located in different zones. In 2019, we are planning to run a trial on decentralized nursery model to test the feasibility of these nurseries about production of quality seedlings and monitoring the distribution of seedlings to the right farmers. This trial is a long term strategy to simplify distribution process. Decentralized Nurseries will be established at cell level, managed by a nursery operators and funded by One Acre Fund/Tubura. Farmers’ mobilization will be done in collaboration of Nursery Operators, Farmer Promoters and Sedos.
S/he will assist in research of new seedlings production model, testing the feasibility of decentralized trees nursery. The extension intern will serve as the main field presence as part of that implementation, supporting the team on the ground in all the ways necessary to have a successful decentralized nursery. Below are more detail responsibilities of extension intern
Setting strategy for decentralized nursery operation and trees distribution: The end goal of decentralized nursery will be to produce healthy seedlings, distributes seedlings and have a high survival rate after distribution.
Support hiring Nursery managers: The intern will work closely with the manager and RAB field coordinator to hire decentralized nursery operators.
Train the nursery operators: Once the nursery operators have been hired, he will design and possibly lead an on-boarding process and will train them for their new responsibilities.
Materials Support: This intern will support in creation of nursery material
Nursery material distribution: The intern will be responsible of distribution of nursery material to the nursery managers and make sure all material are kept in safe place before use
Approval of nursery sites: He should approve all nursery sites
Monitoring of nursery activities: He will be responsible of monitoring of nursery activities including nurseries establishment, planting of seed and seedling monitoring
Local government engagement: he will work hand in hand with local government in the implementation sectors to make sure that local authorities are aware of nurseries work progress.
M&E data collection: collect nursery progress data for monitoring and evaluation purpose
Reporting: he will write decentralized nursery implementation report
Follow up farmers’ mobilization process: registration of farmers will be done by Farmer Promoter. This staff will follow up the progress of mobilization and report to his manager.
Approval of number of healthy seedlings: only healthy seedling will be distributed to farmers. Before distribution, he will check the quality of seedlings and approve which seedlings to distribute to farmers.
Data entry and basic analysis: enter data collected and make basic data analysis for decentralized nursery implementation activities
Develop lessons learnt document: he will be responsible of postmortem of decentralized nursery project
Support 20A trees distribution campaign: depending on the workload, he will support distribution of trees in 20A trees distribution campaign.
Support for any other task assigned by his/her manager

Bachelor’s degree in any field with at least two years’ work experience n execution project
Working in trees nursery or Initiating a tree nursery business will be an advantage
Good written and Verbal English and Kinyarwanda
Strong collaboration with people at different level
Willing to stay at the area of implementation
Good in computer literacy (world, excel and PowerPoint)
Able to work independently
PREFERRED START DATE
Interns will be provided with a reasonable stipend for the duration of their contract. Rural area based fellows will be provided assistance in locating suitable housing. The fellowship/internship program is a recruiting initiative.
