JOB AT Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) : Associate, Assistive Technologies
Overview
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org
Assistive technology (AT) is an umbrella term covering the systems and services related to the delivery of assistive products and services. Specific examples include spectacles, hearing aids, wheelchairs, crutches and prostheses, and the service delivery systems that supply these products. Over one billion (largely disabled and older) people are currently in need of AT, a number predicted to rise to two billion by 2050. Yet, right now only about one tenth of the people who need AT – to learn, to work or to fully participate in their families and communities –have access to it (WHO, 2017). The AT sector faces multiple barriers both in supply of appropriate, affordable, and quality products and in demand for these products by users, service providers, and national health systems.
In 2018, a new global partnership with a focus on increasing access to AT is coming together with the goal of addressing the AT gap. Under this partnership, the New Market Opportunities Team (NMOT) within CHAI has received an award to work on a program to drive affordability and availability for assistive technologies. The anticipated specific components of the project are:
Research, scoping and future planning. This component will explore in depth the current procurement and supply landscape for specific assistive technologies in order to identify opportunities and market-based interventions, culminating in a market shaping plan.
Creation of market shaping tools designed to influence the market-shaping levers highlighted above.
Pilot testing of market interventions through engagement with specific countries and opportunities. These are countries that have prioritized AT and have a plan for increasing access. The purpose of the pilots is both to increase access for users in the country and also to demonstrate models of financing, procurement, and distribution that increase availability.
CHAI NMOT is seeking to assemble a team with the right sets of skills and experience to successfully execute this program and have a transformative impact on the AT sector. The program has a significant amount of flexibility in terms of technical direction and where the project can invest, and it will take a team of entrepreneurial, passionate, and innovative team members to effectively identify opportunities and guide the project towards areas of greatest impact. The CHAI team will also be setting the stage for multiple other partners who are interested in supporting market shaping for AT, and are looking to benefit from CHAI’s experience in transforming health commodity markets.
The Associate will work with project management to deliver on the goals of the project, ensuring high quality technical analysis and outputs that contribute to a global conversation on market shaping approaches to increase access to AT. In addition, the Associate will identify early opportunities for market shaping approaches and develop high quality reports, databases, and other technical products to increase the availability of critical AT. The Associate will also contribute to implementation of programmatic pilots under the project.
The Associate will work closely with the relevant stakeholders in CHAI, particularly on the Global Markets Team, CHAI country teams and potential external implementing partners and in the broader AT accessibility project. S/he will be expected to build expertise in the area of AT and to develop the knowledge of others within CHAI as appropriate. The Associate will report to the PM, AT. S/he will be responsible for ensuring quality of research products. In addition, the Associate will contribute to the broader NMOT portfolio, including programmatic scoping and incubation.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding analytical ability, communication skills, and academic credentials. The candidate must be able to function independently and flexibly and have a strong commitment to excellence.
