Title: Head, Community Health and Social Medicine

Reports to: Director, Institute of Global Health

Program: Master of Science in Global Health Delivery (MGHD) and MBBS (MD) program

Location: University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) in Butaro, Rwanda

 

Position Overview

 

As a new university committed to providing an academic experience, rooted in global health delivery and equity, UGHE seeks a Head of Community Health and Social Medicine, a visionary leader with vast implementation expertise, experience teaching and developing academic training programs, a robust
research portfolio, and a deep commitment to equity-driven access to the highest quality education.

 

Through a unique combination of curricular content, innovative pedagogy, robust research experience, UGHE seeks a leader with a similar creative approach coupled with the energy, determination, and dedication to realize such a vision.

 

The Head will oversee, develop, evaluate, and improve current and future program models for all aspects of community based education programs of the MBBS (MD) program, the practicum of MGHD and the Health Policy module of the MGHD program. S/he will direct a team of faculty and staff that involved in the development and delivery of all aspects of the programs.

 

Responsibilities

 

 

Provide Strategic Leadership (25%)

 

● Oversee the strategic direction and continuous improvement all community-based education program (MBBS and Nursing), MGHD student practicum projects, integration of the MGHD program into UGHE’s future degree offerings, and the Health Policy and Political Economy module in partnership with the dean, the UGHE’s Director of IGH, other academic department heads, and non-academic staff.
○ Manage, mentor, and supervise a growing UGHE staff and faculty team.
○ Cultivate a strong body of teaching faculty.
○ Oversee the development of new delivery models and modalities for the Practicum and Health Policy and Political Economy modules of the MGHD degree, lead the Community Based Education program for MBBS as well as other community education programs.
○ Participate in and provide leadership on academic committee overseeing student performance.
○ Oversee the continuous monitoring, evaluation, and quality improvement for all aspects of the Community Health and Social Medicine, in partnership with MGHD, MBBS and other academic programs team such as nursing.

● Provide direction for priority strategic initiatives in the academic realm
○ Develop and maintain a robust partnership portfolio.
○ Provide strategy and direction for Global Health Education at UGHE.
○ Serve as a leader for academic developments including global health learning, teaching, research.

● Identify and create strategic partnerships with local and international organizations for practicum placement opportunities

 

 

Teach (40%)

 

● Support the design of, direct, and teach MBBS, MGHD and other academic courses and executive, non-degree, certificate courses.
● Serve as course lead and teaching faculty member for Practicum, and Community Based Education, and Health Policy and Political Economy.
● Serve as course instructor/coordinator in other modules of MGHD, MBB and other programs as either in the lead or supporting role where skills and expertise apply, course may include Leadership and Management,Evidence-Based Global Health Delivery, Principles in Global Health Equity, Managing Global Health Care Delivery and other executive education courses.

Supervising and mentoring (20%)

● Supervise and mentor UGHE’s junior faculty in professional development, including but not limited to education, research, management and communication skills.
● Mentor and guide students through their practicum learning as well as ongoing professional growth.

 

 

 

Conduct and Accompany Research (10%)

 

● Undertake research leading to peer-reviewed publications focused on global health delivery and equity.
● Accompany and mentor student and alumni-driven global health research linked to their UGHE training.

Qualifications

● Doctoral level degree in public health or health-related field
● Demonstrated expertise in global health care delivery
● Advanced training and experience in health, research, or clinical education with a focus on global settings and equity-driven initiatives
● Experience teaching and developing academic health science training for students
● Passion for and experience mentoring students, faculty, and staff
● Experience overseeing academic programs and health initiatives
● Commitment to equity-centered education
● Strong record of peer-reviewed publications focused on implementation science
● Excitement for working in a dynamic, fast-paced, startup educational environment
● Ability to work evenings and weekends when the many courses are held
● Willingness to relocate to Butaro, Rwanda

UGHE faculty will be based at our campus in Butaro, Northern Rwanda. The campus is situated in a scenic area with a mild climate year-round. New, on-campus housing is available for full-time faculty.

UGHE also offers a competitive salary and health care benefits. Faculty moving to UGHE from outside of Rwanda for this position will receive a relocation allotment and an annual stipend for travel to their home countries for themselves and eligible dependents.
