PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Education Assistant will work in collaboration with the Education Officer for the planning and implementation of Save the Children’s Education in Emergency activities. The Education Assistant will ensure that the Alternative and Accelerated Learning Program for Out Of School Children and Youth is of high quality.  S/he will be responsible for monitoring processes for Education activities; ensuring that reporting is high-quality and timely, and that the programme is continually assessed and solutions quickly put in place for any changes in context. In most circumstances, the post-holder will be expected to mentor and/or capacity build for existing volunteers.

 

Under the supervision of the Education Officer, the Education Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Conducting supportive supervision for teachers
  • Documentation of all Education activities
  • Preparing and Updating students’ database
  • Attendance tracking and follow up for students who have irregular attendance
  • Monitoring all teaching and Learning activities  conducted for alternative and Accelerated Learning program and providing related reports

Perform other responsibilities that may be attributed to him/her by his/her line manager

 

The Education Assistant will ensure that project activities are consistent with Save the Children’s programming principles and approaches, draw on relevant best practices and lessons learned, enable children to attain their rights and are compliant with donor regulations.

 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Active participation in community mobilization to raise awareness for Out of School Children  and Youth to go back to school
  • Facilitate the reintegration of children into formal Education, follow up and provide constant advice for supporting children to stay in school.
  • Conduct supportive supervision for teachers
  • Preparing the database for all students participating in Alternative and Accelerated Learning Program
  • Advise and monitor all Teaching and Learning activities related to Alternative and Accelerated Learning  Program
  • Co-Facilitate different Education training for teachers;
  • Conduct community dialogue sessions wherever necessary;
  • Submit weekly plan and reports on Education activities ;
  • Work collaboratively with the rest of the team
  • Participate in all meetings, and planning of weekly activities, with Education staff.

Program Management

  • Assist the Education Officer in implementing Education activities and acts in the absence of the Education Officer
  • Participate in program and budget monitoring to ensure timely and quality results
  • Responsible for providing weekly and monthly reports to Education Officer for Review.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Education facilitators’ program activities, monitoring, documentation and reporting.

Programme Planning and Implementation:

  • Responsible for participating in planning, monitoring and supervision of  Education activities  and ensuring quality compliance
  • Support Education volunteers  in developing ways to better monitor program implementation and quality reporting on a regular basis
  • Participate and support staff and other stakeholders where necessary
  • Work closely with Education Officer and Education, Livelihoods and Youth Empowerment Manager in analysing Education issues and complaints raised by children and Youth participating in Alternative and Accelerated Learning Program as well as their parents and other people from the community and support in providing appropriate feedback.
  • Participate in all Education, Livelihoods and Youth Empowerment  team meetings and planning sessions

Capacity Building and Program quality:

  • Support the Education Officer and Education, Livelihoods and Youth Empowerment Manager to identify gaps and learning needs among Education team and volunteers as well as developing capacity building plans
  • Work closely with Education volunteers to ensure that Alternative and accelerated Learning Program meet quality benchmarks, and work with the partner staff to achieve quality programming in Education
  • Help strengthen Education MEAL System and accountability by supporting systems to seek, receive, and respond to beneficiaries’ feedback, suggestions, and complaints.

  • In the absence of Education Officer, represent SCI in Education sector meetings and any other relevant meeting when required
  • Regularly attend and participate in different meetings with community leaders, parents or any other meeting related to education at Camp level.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education
  • 2 years of experience working in education especially with refugees
  • Good technical understanding of Education approaches
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrate interest and experience in working with vulnerable people
  • Ability to communicate with English and Kinyarwanda/Kirundi
  • Ability to participate in data collection
  • The ability to communicate professionally and appropriately with children and young people, parents and community members
  • Experience of working through systems of community participation
    • Ability to supervise and mentor staff to achieve results
    • Good computer skills (MS Office, including Outlook for email).
    • Strong organizational skills.
