Africa Improved Foods (AIF), is a Public-Private Partnership focused on addressing malnutrition through the production of nutritious, high-quality fortified foods. It is a joint venture involving a number of international organizations: DSM – the largest nutrition company in the world; the World Bank (IFC); the UK Govt (CDC) the Dutch Govt (FMO). The Government of Rwanda, and the World Food Programme.

Our products are intended to address malnutrition among vulnerable population segments such as pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, older infants and young children especially in the first 1,000 days of their life. To this end, we have built a world-class food processing plant in Rwanda – to serve the East Africa region – and are now expanding into Ethiopia.

In as much as we are a commercial, for-profit organization, we also strive to have the maximum social, economic and environmental impact possible on the communities in which we operate. In this respect, we have strong working relationships with reputable NGO’s across the EAC Region.

General Job information

Job title: Head of Accounting

Business Group/ Unit: Africa Improved Foods Rwanda Ltd

Department: Finance

Reports to: Senior Financial Controller

Direct reports: Four (4)

Purpose of the job

The Head of Accounting is responsible for all areas relating to accounting and financial reporting. The job holder shall be responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. He/she is also responsible for managing the team, ensuring that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. He/she shall also ensure internal reporting deadlines are adhered to.

Required level of experience

  • Overseeing and maintaining the whole accounting and reporting activities.
  • Confirm financial status by monitoring revenue and expenses; coordinating receivable collections and evaluation of accounting data.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual reporting deadlines are met
  • Maintain financial and accounting information security by maintaining internal control procedures within the Finance department.
  • Support budget and forecasting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory regulatory requirements
  • Ensure clean and timely yearend financial statements and statutory audits respectively.
  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department and the company as a whole.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


  • Strong accounting and Financial knowledge as well as analytical skills
  • Familiar with the Laws and Regulations that govern companies in Rwanda
  • Strong IFRS and GAAP knowledge is an added advantage
  • Proficiency in planning, time management and ability to work under minimum of supervision

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and people management skills is required
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines is required
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and high integrity
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated competences in championing quality result oriented delivery as well as management of people in a multicultural environment
  • Pro-active in process-efficiency-initiatives, corporate behaviors with high integrity are important for this job

Educational Level and Knowledge

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance or any other business related studies from a recognized University
  • A relevant professional qualification i.e. CPA or ACCA is an added advantage
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree in Finance and Business related studies will be an added advantage
  • Proficiency in ERP and accounting systems (preferably SAP)
  • Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda speaking is required. Other languages would be an added advantage

Working experience

  • Minimum of 4 years in Finance, Accounting, Audit-related field is a requirement
  • Proven work experience in areas of accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis will be an added advantage
  • Prior experience in audit, accounting, and finance related filed will be and added advantage
  • Prior experience in interacting effectively with auditors
  • Audit and Tax Expert prior experience would be an added advantage
