Background
CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience in order to sustain development results.

UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

The UNDP Rwanda Country Office has three programme units; Sustainable Growth Unit, Transformational Governance Unit and Inclusive Green Economy Unit, as well as programme support units which include the operations (Finance, HR, Procurement, and ICT), Management Support and Communications. UNDP has been a long-term partner in Rwanda, supporting the national development journey particularly in the area of poverty eradication, environment protection, access to justice, democratic governance and gender equality and women empowerment.

The Sustainable Growth Unit has a big portfolio on Environment, with which the intern will be working. This portfolio encompasses Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services including forests, Sustainable Land Management and Desertification including food and commodity systems, Water and Ocean Governance, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, Renewable and Modern Energy, Chemicals and Waste Management, Environmental Governance and Green/Circular Economy. The work on these areas includes crosscutting themes on innovative finance, digital transformation, capacity development, human rights, gender equality, health, technology, and south-south learning.

As an intern, you will be supporting the work on these areas, with focus on Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource Management, through the duties described in the section below.

Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES:

The intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

1 Programme Support

  • Support the Country Office’s programmes on Environment, Natural Resources and Biodiversity Conservation.
  • Assist in monitoring and participation in the evaluation of the management of environment programs
  • Prepare drafts of relevant background documents for programmes, such as terms of reference, concept notes, briefings, reports, discussion papers, etc.

2 Communications and knowledge building

  • Assist with maintenance of open communication channels through participation in meetings with various stakeholders
  • As part of a team, facilitate knowledge building and management within the unit in the framework of programming

3 Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Support other/ad hoc activities as seen relevant and needed.
  • Support M&E officer to collect and analyze the project data,
  • Draft report of the mission and project implementation
  • Draft communication material like tweets, post, blogs around the work of the SGU

Required Skills and Experience
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  • currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree; or
  • currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
  • have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

Field of study: Development Studies, Biodiversity/Conservation Studies, Environment Studies or equivalent.

IT skills:

  • Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;

Language skills:

  • English required;
  • Knowledge of Kinyarwanda is mandatory
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

  • UNDP interns will receive stipend monthly inline with UNDP internship policy guidelines.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.
  • Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
  • Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
  • Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.
