Background
 CORPORATE BACKGROUND:

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion.  INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

YouthConnekt Africa recognizes that youth are an exceedingly important demographic within the continent and aims to improve life outcomes for youth today and for future generations through 5 key goals. YouthConnekt Africa has the mandate of job creation, personal and professional skill development, nurturing young leaders, connecting young Africans, and closing the gender gap. At large, the purpose of this position is to coordinate with all member states and to facilitate various methods of communication between countries, stakeholders, and management. The roles and responsibilities of the associate are further detailed below.

Duties and Responsibilities
 DUTIES:

The intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

  Under the supervision of the YouthConnekt Africa Executive Director, the intern will:

  1. Coordination

-Implement processes and system improvements for programs and projects to help build capacity across all countries of operation

-Organize and facilitate various logistics operations

-Provide additional support to programs such as report-writing, conducting research, data collection and analysis, among other tasks
– Maintain an organized, comprehensive, and intuitive record of programs and partners

-Keep an organized schedule in reference to all events, programs, and meetings
-Track timelines and ensure tasks are being completed in a timely manner
-Enforcing organizational and national level guidelines

-Support member countries in various capacities to accelerate growth of memberships and productivity according to the mission of YouthConnekt Africa
-Additional support of operations as requested by supervisor

  1. Communication
    -Maintain and monitor an open line of communication with country representatives
    -Facilitate communication with various teams, partners, audiences, and management
    -Produce, edit, and present reports to colleagues both internal and external

-Prepare discussion points, such as areas for improvement and goal setting, for meetings
-Engage in and provide administrative support during online meetings, in-person meetings, and conference calls
-Identifying gaps in communication and implementing strategies for improvement

  1. Facilitation and improvement of cross-national/ internal functions and communication to ensure the goals of YouthConnekt Africa are being met in a timely and efficient manner

  • Good knowledge of project management and youth empowerment issues
  • Good knowledge of MS Office, Outlook, and organizational software
  • Excellent writing skills.

Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree; or currently enrolled in a master’s degree in International Affairs, Political Science, Economics, Business Administration, or an otherwise relevant field.
  • have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

 Skills and Experience

  • Previous administrative or communication related work and/or volunteer experience
  • Experience drafting and editing documents
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working internationally and in inter-cultural communications a strong asset
  • Familiarity and commitment to the mission of YouthConnekt Africa
  • Cultural empathy and ability to work diplomatically across several nations
  • Strong ethics which enable one to work with sensitive information and high-level partners
  • Independently motivated, yet also able to work well within a group setting

Language skills:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required.
  • Kinyarwanda and French an asset
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

  • UNDP interns receive a stipend monthly inline with UNDP internship policy guidelines
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.
  • Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
  • Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education program.
  • Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.
