Aim and Benefits of UNESCO France Young Associate Expert (JEA/JPO)

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under the general authority of the Chief of the Marine Policy and Regional Coordination Section and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of the Ocean Decade Coordination Unit, the JEA will carry out the following tasks in close collaboration with the staff of the Decade Coordination Unit :

  • Identify and document the links between existing and potential Decade initiatives with the main marine policy frameworks (BBNJ, Kunming-Montreal GBF, UNFCCC, UNOC…) and identify actions aimed at strengthening the Decade’s contribution to these frameworks policies.
  • Work with the Decade portfolio of actions to identify key outcomes that will contribute to the development and implementation of national, regional and international policy frameworks, and help them effectively communicate priority outcomes to Member States and other key partners.
  • Contribute to the development of resources and capacity building initiatives (training, exchange mechanisms, etc.) to increase the capacity of Ocean Decade beneficiaries to work at the science-policy-society interface at national, regional and international.
  • Support the Decade Coordination Unit in the day-to-day implementation of the Decade, including contributing to reports, events, resource mobilization and partnership development.
  • Contribute to the development of analyses, reports, maps, briefing notes, publications and other internal and external documents, as needed.
  • Undertake any other tasks discussed with the supervisor.

 

 

Requirements for UNESCO France Young Associate Expert (JEA/JPO) Qualification

General conditions for candidates for the JEA de France program:

  • Nationality: National of a member state of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF).
  • Age: 32 years maximum.
  • Education: Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in science or engineering
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience in the field of oceanography is preferred, with a minimum of one year of experience at the international level.
  • Language: Excellent knowledge of French and English.

Interview date, Process and Venue for UNESCO France Young Associate Expert (JEA/JPO)

Selection

Education: Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in ocean sciences, ocean governance and/or marine policy.

Work Experience: A minimum of two years of work experience in the field of oceanography is preferred, with at least one year of international experience.

Skills and competences :

  • Excellent understanding of global and regional priorities in ocean science
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated understanding of the United Nations system and UNESCO and in-depth understanding of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development
  • Good understanding of the challenges faced by SIDS partners, including in the Tropical Americas and Caribbean (TAC) region
  • Agility and flexibility; ability to meet tight deadlines and manage changing priorities
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.

Languages: Excellent knowledge of French and English.
