Canton, New York, The Agricultural Development and Marketing Specialist will develop and promote programs that will enhance the economic viability and marketing strategies of agricultural enterprises in St.

Lawrence County.

The focus of extension efforts will be educational leadership for agricultural marketing, business development, and consumer awareness.

The primary target audience is direct-market producers, including, but not limited to, CSA farms, roadside stands, farm storefront operations, farmer’s markets and food-based businesses showcasing local and/or value-added products.

The Specialist will develop and lead an agriculture focused development network of county-based service providers including Extension, Industrial Development Agency, Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Development Center, GardenShare, and others, to provide seamless business development and marketing assistance to St.

Lawrence County producers.

The Specialist will develop, coordinate and lead an Ag and Food Producers Academy, showcasing business development and marketing strategies in partnership with cooperating service providers.

Educational efforts should lead to impacts including agricultural business development and/or expansion, improved direct marketing strategies, and heighten consumer awareness of local products and access to markets, especially in underserved populations.

Preferred Qualifications: A commitment to and passion for local food system development in New York State.

Familiarity of subject matter appropriate to area of programming (Agriculture & Food Systems) and knowledge of agriculture in northern New York.

Related experience in agricultural development, community development, marketing, communications, journalism, graphic design or related fields in higher education.

Demonstrated ability to establish and communicate objectives and to plan, market, implement, teach, and evaluate meaningful and achievable program plans.

Ability to create effective marketing materials and social media campaigns.

Flexible; comfortable experimenting with new technology.

Knowledge of agricultural Extension programs and the land-grant mission.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Program Responsibilities: Program Assessment – 1 5% Establish program priorities by evaluating the needs of county producers and incorporating the objectives of the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service funded Growing Resilience Initiative and the St.

Lawrence County Ag Development Plan.

Apply subject matter knowledge to identify gaps and trends in the community.

Develop program needs assessment.

Make recommendations for programmatic offerings, enhancements or improvements.

Ensure program assessment is within the scope of work.

Program Development – 15% Develop program and resource materials to teach business development and marketing strategies to new and existing agricultural businesses.

Develop a collaborative network across organizations that provide services to support business development and marketing efforts for new and existing agricultural businesses.

Develop a multi-session Ag and Food Producers Academy, in partnership with participating service providers, which encompasses wide ranging topics related to business development and marketing.

Research, identify and select existing resources for the program.

Structure programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants.

Develop program to meet changing local issues.

Program Delivery – 20% Serve as subject matter expert in agricultural development and marketing to county producers, program participants, community organizations and the general public.

Provide technical assistance to producers developing marketing assets that enhance awareness of their products and the vitality of their business.

Provide education and technical assistance on business start-ups, identifying opportunities and resources to improve current operations, expand or diversify into new enterprises or markets.

Facilitate and encourage networking between producers, processors, and consumers as a part of program delivery to promote and encourage product sales and expand markets for area business owners.

Provide program outreach via mass media, in print and online resources.

Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Agriculture and Food Systems staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

Program Evaluation – 20% Design evaluation system to obtain data from program participants.

Obtain data to evaluate effectiveness of agriculture and food system programming.

Evaluate data and adjust programming to better meet the evolving needs of programs participants.

Communicate evaluation results and findings.

Administrative Responsibilities: Direction – 10% Collaborate with Supervisor in planning and directing a marketing strategy to showcase local producers, products and access points in St.

Lawrence County.

Establish/develop effective collaborations and communication between potential and current producers/growers and markets/consumers.

Provide moderately complex administrative tasks to support the planning of educational programs to include via various methods.

Collaborate with Association in the writing and development of grant applications to secure funding for ongoing/expanded programming efforts.

Develop effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts.

Management – 10% Assist the Supervisor with the monitoring income/expenses to ensure spending is within the program budget constraint.

Assist in oversight of program resources to objectives within Agriculture and Food Systems and in compliance with established policies and procedures.

Provide program related information to the budget development process and assist the Supervisor in allocating budget amounts.

Coordination/Operation – 5% Implement effective marketing strategies in the promotion of programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, and multi-media efforts.

Write, post and regularly refresh feature stories and program highlights, which may include presentations, newsletters, social media content, brochures, videos, podcasts, one-pagers, posters, trade show exhibits, talking points, impact statements, etc.

Coordinate and collaborate with other agencies, organizations and businesses involved in food system development.

Provide moderately complex administrative support to prepare materials for report submission to meet funding and Association requirements.

This position may require the transport of program materials and resources in performing position responsibilities.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned – 5% In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.

Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
