2025 UNESCO–AlUla Fellowships Programme (Fully Funded) Deadline: Ongoing
The UNESCO–AlUla Fellowships Programme is a fully funded, 24-month initiative developed through a strategic partnership between UNESCO and Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). It supports 10 heritage specialists from invited UNESCO Member States in advancing scientific understanding, conservation strategies, and World Heritage management—especially regarding emergency preparedness and cultural landscapes.
Fellowship Structure & Rotations
The fellowship unfolds across three immersive rotations:
- Rotation 1 (6 months) – Field-based research and action at the Kingdoms Institute in AlUla, focusing on key areas like World Heritage management, archaeology, built heritage, intangible heritage, heritage conservation, and oases as cultural landscapes. Each focus area includes two fellowship slots.
- Rotation 2 (12 months) – A sponsored traineeship at a UNESCO Culture Programme site—such as the World Heritage Centre or Emergency Response Unit in Paris, or one of several regional field offices.
- Rotation 3 (6 months) – A placement within a UNESCO National Commission, museum, or cultural heritage organization in the fellow’s home country or region, tailored to individual background and institutional needs.
What’s Covered
Fellows receive comprehensive support, including:
- International and local travel for all rotations
- Accommodation, local transport, meals, and UN-standard stipends
- Medical insurance for each placement
All benefits are funded by the RCU and UNESCO.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Nationality from an invited UNESCO Member State or Associate Member
- Age between 25 and 40 years when applying
- Qualifications: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in heritage-related fields like archaeology, conservation, cultural policy, anthropology, museum management, or creative industries. Alternatively, a first-level degree plus two years of relevant experience may suffice.
- Language: Fluent English; knowledge of an additional UNESCO language (Arabic, French, etc.) is preferable
