Opportunity Description

The Barry & Marie Lipman Family Prize at the University of Pennsylvania is a global award recognizing outstanding leadership and innovation in the social sector. Each year, it honors organizations with high-impact, transferable solutions that can improve communities worldwide.

Beyond the prize, it fosters meaningful connections between changemakers and the Penn community, accelerating smart, scalable change across disciplines and geographies.

The Prize benefits

Each year, the Lipman Family Prize honors three organizations. The grand prize winner receives a $250,000 unrestricted cash award, while the two other winners each receive $150,000. All winners also gain access to non-monetary benefits, including

    • A long-term partnership with the University of Pennsylvania
    • Public recognition and networking within the Penn and Lipman Prize communities
    • Tuition-free executive education (valued at $15,000)
    • A $10,000 nonprofit leadership scholarship

Who can apply?

Application is open to:

  • Nonprofits, NGOs, and civil society organizations worldwide
  • Must hold nonprofit legal status in the U.S. or home country
  • Must have operated for at least 3 years
  • Must show 3+ years of impact and monitoring data
  • Annual expenses must average $500,000–$5M over 3 years
  • Must not primarily redistribute funds or engage in religious or lobbying activities
  • Must not discriminate based on race, religion, origin, orientation, age, or disability
  • Organizations with potential conflicts of interest related to the University of Pennsylvania must contact the organizers for an eligibility review.

Selection Criteria

Below are the selection criteria for 2025 awards:

  • Leadership: Sustainable, exemplary models tackling universal problems
  • Impact: Proven results with strong potential for scaling
  • Innovation: Unique or differentiated solutions to pressing global challenges
  • Transferability: Adaptable practices with relevance beyond local contexts

Application Process Overview

  • Phase 1: Open Applications (July 1–31)
    Submit an online application with basic info, financials, and five short essays covering your social challenge, model, innovation, impact, and transferability. All applicants are notified by September.

  • Phase 2: Due Diligence (September–November)
    Selected applicants submit detailed materials (e.g., financials, strategic plans). Lipman Fellows and financial experts review submissions. Twenty to forty organizations advance; twelve semi-finalists are announced in December.

  • Phase 3: Semi-Finalist Review (December–February)
    Submit a short video and final materials. Lipman Fellows present cases to the Prize Committee for review. Three winners selected and notified in late February.

  • Phase 4: Winner Interviews & Final Selection (March–April)
    Winning teams complete virtual interviews with the Prize Committee. The grand prize winner is chosen and announced at the April Award Ceremony at Penn. Travel and lodging are covered for one representative.
