Role overview
The objective of the placement is to transfer skills and knowledge to pediatric and neonatal department staff specifically and hospital staff in general in order to improve health outcomes and increase the quality of services in local health facilities.
You will directly contribute to improved accessibility and availability of newborn health services and support clinical supervision and the management of newborn health services in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and where possible surrounding health facilities/units.
These objectives are subject to improvement/modification after discussion with the project manager as well as the implementing partner. We are looking to strengthen our talent pool for Neonatal nurses to be able to respond to upcoming demand. Countries that need Neonatal nurse volunteers are: Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. However, more Neonatal volunteer jobs will be coming up later too.
Skills, qualifications, and experience
Essential
Qualified Nurse specialized in Neonatal Nursing
Registered Nurse with proof of a professional license. Fully accredited by the relevant professional body
Current experience as a registered nurse in a hospital setting for at least 3-5 years.
At least 2-3 years’ experience working as a neonatal nurse/ Neonatology or working in the Neonatal Intensive care unit (NICUs).
Experience in mentoring/training of nurses, students at a neonatal/pediatric Department of any Hospital/in a clinic.
Able to cope with stress and to organize and prioritize workload
Desirable
Masters of Science in Nursing
Additional specialization in areas like Paediatric care
Basic computer skill
Experience in mentoring and teaching/Bedside teaching
Experience in working abroad in a similar setting/context (Africa/Asia)

Allowance
As a VSO volunteer, you will be sharing your skills with local communities on a full time basis. Role overview
This placement includes but is not limited to the following objectives:
- Improve the quality of Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) services in the region by strengthening the capacity of midwives, health care workers, community health workers and establishment of systems and referral mechanisms essential for maternal and newborn care both at faculty and community level.
- Support the roll-out of the national Nursing and Midwifery Curriculum by coaching tutors in the implementation and advising on additional adolescent-friendly service provision and early essential newborn care.
- Provide technical capacity-building support to health workers in conducting ultrasound scans of pregnant women and provide day to day support at a health facility, planning and organizing outreach MNH services with the help of health care workers and DHMTs (applicable for Sierra Leone)
Skills, qualifications and experience
Essential
- Registered Midwife- Fully accredited by the relevant professional body.
- At least 5 years’ experience as a midwife in hospital setting.
- Experience in mentoring/training of nurses, students at a maternity and Pediatric Department of any hospital/clinic.
- Experience of working in Gynecology/Obstetrics and neonatal intensive care unit.
- Current knowledge in the field of maternal and child health, including some or all of the following: infection, prevention, antenatal care, family planning, PMTCT, essential and emergency maternal and newborn care.
- Solid communication, presentation and writing skills.
- Demonstrated self-management (i.e. motivation, dealing with pressure, adaptability)
- Teamwork, with the ability to work collaboratively in diverse multi-cultural groups. Ability to work in an institutional environment, – hospital and health facility settings – as well as in the community setting
- Effective communications skills (report writing, verbal and written)
For Tanzania:
- Fluency in Swahili and English languages and the ability to communicate with different stakeholders on different levels within organisations.)
Desirable

Role overview
The ideal person in this role will:
- Work in collaboration with the Regional Health Management Team (RHMT) to strengthen gynecological services in targeted health facilities and improve quality of cesarean sections.
- Build the capacity of medical officers, health workers and clinical leads in essential and emergency maternal obstetrics care through training, job coaching, mentoring and support supervision.
- Support strengthening functioning of maternity, labor wards and level four health care facilities.
- Provide technical capacity-building support to health workers in conducting ultrasound scans of pregnant women (applicable for Sierra Leone)
- Plan and organize outreach MNH services with the help of care workers and DHMTs (applicable for Sierra Leone)

Skills, qualifications and experience
Essential:
- Qualified Medical degree with a specialization in Obstetrics/Gynaecology.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of post-qualification work experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

- The ideal candidate should have expert experience in ultrasound machine/V-Scan
- Obstetrics experience including labor management and recognition of obstetric emergency
- You are fully accredited in your home country.
- You have the ability to work with limited technical resources
- You have experience in training, coaching, and supervision
- Fluent English proficiency
- IT skills (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
