Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

 

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the mandated Agency to support central and local government officials in the identification of proper solutions for fostering sustainable urban development processes.

 

UN-Habitat has been working in Rwanda since 1994 in post-genocide reconstruction activities. The UN-Habitat Rwanda Office was opened in July 2004. This Country office played an active role to align UN-Habitat contribution with Government strategies (EDPRS and vision 2020) by promoting sustainable urbanization. UN-Habitat has also implemented an important number of projects since 2008 within the Delivering as One UN framework on issues related to housing construction for returnees and poor, regional and urban planning, environmental guidelines, water and sanitation works, slum upgrading, among others.

 

The collaboration between UN-Habitat and the Government of Rwanda towards the common goal of achieving inclusive economic transformation through sustainable urbanization, was facilitated by a Memorandum of Understanding between the UN-Habitat and the Government of Rwanda represented by the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) since 2013.

 

The UN-Habitat Programme Support internship is for 6 months.

 

 

 

 

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

 

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the National Technical Advisor for Rwanda the intern will:

– Support in data collection for the update of the current SDF report.
– Support in data collection through literature review and partner’s interviews and workshops for the elaboration of the Strategic National Action Plan.
– Support in the dissemination of the SDF and Training of Trainers (ToT) at Central level.
– Assist districts in reviewing and adapting District Development Plans.
– Support the country office (Rwanda) on administrative issues related to SDF projects, including documentations, organizing events, communication with government and other partners.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

 

 

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area of Study:

Urban and Regional Planning, Economy and finance, GIS, Civil Engineer, Architect or related (Master or PhD candidate preferable)

 

 

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge French and Kinyarwanda is desirable.
