ROLE PROFILE:
Title: Research & Content Generation Assistant

Reports to: Hamwe Festival Chief Organizer

Location: Kigali, Rwanda

Nature of role: Fixed Term Contract – 6 months

Role Purpose: To contribute to the creation and publication of online content

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the team in writing collaborative articles to be published in UGHE’s online platforms and others
  • Conduct interviews of Arts in Health professionals’ and other UGHE’s collaborators
  • Support the preparation of online public meetings and performances
  • Document panels, meetings, interviews, and other events
  • Support key steps of online content generation, like research, facts checking, quality control, editing in close collaboration with other members of the team
  • Interact with UGHE collaborators and provide them with the information and support they need to collaborate with Hamwe teams effectively
  • Contribute to reporting to UGHE leadership

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field (with proven excellent writing skills). Bachelor’s degree in communication or journalism (with proven interest and knowledge in global health)
  • Strong research skills
  • High-level familiarity with the field of global health equity
  • Excellent writing skills in English with previous publications (book contribution, article, Op-Eds or others)

ROLE PROFILE:
Title: Director of Partnerships  

Reports to: Vice-Chancellor

Location: Rwanda with a lot of International Travels

ROLE PURPOSE: This role exists to raise financial support and create partnerships to support the University around the world.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Project management

  • Develop UGHE’s fundraising strategy with KPIs, in consultation with the Executive Leadership Team of UGHE, to outline the University’s fundraising priorities;
  • Implement and manage the University fundraising efforts according to set targets aimed at raising funds to support the overall objectives and priorities of UGHE;
  • Monitor the progress towards fundraising goals and make an appropriate adjustment to the fundraising strategy;
  • Prepare quarterly reports on fundraising campaign progress and present them to the Executive Leadership Team of UGHE to update and inform UGHE’s corporate decision making;
  • Oversee the fund-raising campaign communications by creating content for the UGHE newsletter and talking points for the media whilst integrating campaign milestones into ongoing public relations outreach;
  • Facilitate the fundraising committee activities to enhance participation from all senior management members and report to the VC;
  • Project and manage the campaign fundraising budget to ensure the department has adequate funds to achieve its objectives of raising more for UGHE
  • Establish and track against growth targets across each member of the Development Team
  • Manage pipeline and deliver a monthly report to the VC of fundraising and implementation of ongoing programs

Donor prospecting, cultivation, and management

  • Develop and engage in research of the University’s campaign prospect list in line with UGHE fundraising campaign strategy;
  • Champion the engagement and develop tactics to initiate relationships with prospective funders and partners;
  • Provide support to staff, Board members and Volunteers in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activity in support of UGHE’s fundraising campaign;
  • Diversify the current geographic relationships with prospective funders and partners
  • In collaboration with Partners in Health Development Team plan for donor visits to Rwanda and coordinate other targeted contacts with donors and prospects; and
  • Manage donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and public recognition, as appropriate to recognize their contribution and provide chances for future support.

Proposal development and grants management

  • Convene and lead multidisciplinary teams, representing appropriate organizational stakeholders to conceptualize proposals and develop budgets reflecting UGHE’s strategic priorities;
  • Write and edit persuasive requests for funding, such as letters of inquiry, concept papers, proposals, and grant applications, partnership agreements, MOU’s, etc.
  • as well as reports and other updates to donors in consultation with UGHE Financial Team, program; and
  • Coordinate with other staff on gift accounting, gift acknowledgment, accurate record-keeping, and timely financial reporting in coordination with UGHE finances.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree in finances, international relations, business administration, political science, or a related field.
  • Special training and experiences as a development director or in funds raising
  • Demonstrable track record of strategic fundraising and a proven track record of meeting challenging income targets
  • Proven ability to build, manage, and develop key client and donor relationships.
  • Member of a professional body relevant to their field of specialization and holder of a practice license is additional value.
  • At least 5 years of experiences in a similar role

Laboratory Assistant at University of Global Health Equity (UGHE): (Deadline 28 June 2020)

The Laboratory Assistant will work with the Head of Basic Sciences Laboratory and UGHE faculty to prepare and conduct laboratory experiments aligned with the basic sciences curriculum of the UGHE Medical Program and other academic programs at UGHE as appropriate. She/he will also monitor the stock, equipment maintenance, and safety of the science laboratory on a daily basis.

Responsibilities

  • Set up the lab for specific procedures and demonstrations, and ensure it is returned to excellent working condition after the sessions;
  • Collect samples and perform tests on the biological specimen or other samples in related fields of basic sciences;
  • Ensure proper storage of all chemicals, reagents and other consumables in science laboratory;
  • Demonstrate the use of lab equipment and preparation of working solutions for different lab experiments;
  • Conduct internal quality control and routine maintenance of science laboratory equipment to ensure that it is safe, functional, and produces accurate results;
  • Collaborate with the Head of Basic Sciences Laboratory and other academic teams to schedule science lab sessions;
  • Participate in the preparation of practical teaching materials as well as instructional materials for students to ensure an excellent lab learning experience;
  • Perform practical demonstrations with the students to ensure that they understand the material and acquire necessary laboratory skills;
  • Participate in examining and evaluating students to confirm that learning has actually taken place;
  • Participate in the development of SOPs according to need and follow them in the daily routine of science lab work;
  • Monitor the stock of consumables and reagents in the science lab on a daily basis;
  • Keep the lab environment clean and safely dispose of chemicals and biohazardous waste;
  • Participate in lab-based research & community activities of the division;
  • Attend division meetings and trainings as needed;
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor;

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical laboratory sciences, or a closely related field;
  • Possess active license from Rwanda Allied Health Professional Council (RAHPC)
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a science laboratory (in renowned public or private hospitals, clinics, institutions, universities or teaching hospitals).
  • Experience as a tutorial assistant/laboratory technician conducting laboratory experiments with students in medical programs desired;
  • Proven track record of experience and hands-on skills in Anatomy [Gross, Histology, and Histochemistry] and Physiology
  • Fluency in English (Kinyarwanda or French fluency desired);
  • Ability to pay attention to quality by abiding to principles of good lab practice and ethics;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a team in a complex, fast-paced environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to be well organized and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to relocate to Butaro, Rwanda

The Institute of Global Health Equity Research (IGHER) is the UGHE research institute that will contribute to UGHE’s mission through high-quality research and research training. As the epicenter of global health equity research and research training, IGHER will generate and disseminate new and important knowledge for eliminating health inequities. It will also develop and deliver education and training to ideally equip researchers to identify and solve problems related to health inequity.

ROLE PROFILE

Title: Faculty, Institute of Global Health Equity Research

Head: Research Projects and Training

Reports to: Director, IGHER

Location: Kigali

Role Purpose: Contribute to IGHER’s research, and research training program by leading: the growth of programs in research consisting of multiple and varied research projects; and the development and delivery of a suite of research related education and training programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head, Research Projects, and Training (RP&T) is a position of pivotal operational importance for IGHER. The Head & will lead the expansion of UGHE’s research activities and the growth of the IGHER research agenda through proactive engagement of faculty and engagement with external collaborators, stakeholders, and partners. The Head RP&T will also identify and create education and training opportunities and will lead the design and development of engaging courses and programs. Specifically, the main responsibilities of the position will be to:

Teaching and Training (20%)

  • Contribute to research related teaching in UGHE’s Academic Programs;
  • Identify research education and training priorities and needs and lead the development of appropriate research courses and programs; and
  • Support in building the research capacity of UGHE faculty to not only conduct research but also teach research.

Research (35%)

  • Develop, design, and conduct research projects consistent with IGHER and UGHE strategic priorities;
  • Actively identify and communicate appropriate funding opportunities for UGHE Faculty;
  • Assist UGHE Faculty in the preparation of successful research funding applications; and
  • Assume a leading role in all aspects of obtaining and managing competitive research funding.

Administration and Leadership (40%)

  • Work closely with the Director, IGHER to ensure the ongoing efficient and effective operation of IGHER;
  • Lead the development of systematic approaches to demonstrate and assessing research dissemination and impact;
  • Advise, mentor, and supervise UGHE staff and students in research and research-related education and training initiatives;
  • Actively engage Faculty, particularly junior faculty, in programs of research that are of strategic benefit to UGHE and IGHER;
  • Lead the development, delivery, and promotion of research related education and training initiatives; and
  • Take the lead in the recruitment of other IGHER staff and faculty.

 University and Community Service (5%)

  • Contribute to UGHE committees, working groups, and other initiatives that are of operational and strategic benefit to UGHE through active participation and leadership; and
  • Actively participate and assume leadership roles in community groups and professional organizations and societies that are of operational and strategic benefit to UGHE.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The following qualifications and experience are regarded as the minimum requirements to excel in this position:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MD), with a demonstrable additional qualification and experience in research, and research-related experience for more than 5 years; or
  • Ph.D. in a health science/research field and research experience post the award of the Ph.D. for more than 5 years;
  • Evidence of obtaining research income through competitive funding programs;
  • Evidence of leading successful completion of funded scientific and clinical research projects;
  • Evidence of publishing research in scientific journals;
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, with proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and Google suite;
  • Evidence of extensive experience in health especially with regard to health equity and social justice;
  • Evidence of advanced written and verbal English communication skills;
  • Evidence of exceptional creativity, ethical standards, and motivation;
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and productively both independently and as a leader of teams;
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail and quality;
  • Track record of outstanding academic excellence;
  • Demonstrated understanding and familiarity with different grant systems including international funding organizations such as the NIH, Wellcome Trust, etc.;
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to peer-review research proposals and manuscripts; and
  • Demonstrated ability to use specific computer programs for developing research models, analyzing data, or creating and managing databases.
