Overview

Each year, the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at UBC awards approximately 50 Affiliated Fellowships to outstanding doctoral students pursuing full-time study or research at UBC Vancouver.

Awards are based on academic excellence and are open to both current and prospective UBC graduate students of any citizenship or visa status. Funding ranges from $175 to $40,000, with most fellowships offering approximately $16,000.

Note: The Killam Doctoral Scholarship is part of this competition and is awarded to top-ranked candidates who also meet additional Killam eligibility criteria.

Eligibility

To be considered, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS-D) competition.

Funding Priorities

While applications are reviewed for academic merit, preference is given to students who do not already hold major external funding (i.e., $16,000+ for the 2026–2027 academic year).

Exceptions:

• Students may still hold GSI awards, donor-funded awards recommended by departments, and RA/TA positions while receiving Affiliated Fellowships.

• 4YF recipients may be eligible, though their 4YF award may be partially or fully replaced.

• In rare cases, niche Affiliated awards may be given to students already receiving substantial funding if eligible applications are limited.

• Killam Doctoral Scholarships may serve as a top-up for awardees with other funding.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are assessed based on the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS-D) selection criteria, which include:

• Academic Excellence

• Research Potential

• Communication and Interpersonal Abilities

• Leadership and Engagement

Application Procedures

No separate application is required for Affiliated Fellowships.
All students applying to the CGS-D competition will automatically be considered.

However, to be considered for criteria-based Affiliated awards, applicants must:

1. Review the list of criteria-based awards

2. Identify awards for which they meet specific eligibility

3. Indicate award numbers in their Affiliated Fellowship application

4. Submit the completed criteria-based awards checklist to their graduate program by:
   Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 12:00 PM PT

Nomination Procedures

UBC graduate programs are responsible for:

• Reviewing all applications

• Ranking eligible applicants

• Forwarding top nominees to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by:
  Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 4:00 PM PT

Adjudication

The Affiliated Fellowships – Doctoral competition is adjudicated through the university-wide CGS-D review process, ensuring consistency and transparency across all disciplines.
