Our process prioritizes access, transparency, and equity from application through partnership.

01 Grantmaking Basic Eligibility

To apply for African Collaborative nonprofit funding, organizations must meet these requirements:

  • African-founded, African-led, and African-based
  • Registered nonprofit in the country of operation
  • At least a founding board of directors
  • Partial staff compensation, with leadership/senior staff on payroll

Additional Requirements

  • At least 2 consecutive years of external audits
  • Financial management systems (budgeting, accounting software, board reporting)
  • Minimum 3 years of operation
  • Annual budget of $150,000+

Funding is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa-based nonprofits.

02 Organizational Foundation & Growth Stages

We support organizations through two tracks of African Collaborative grantmaking:

Ignite Track (Sparking Growth)

  • Founding board established
  • Strategic direction in progress
  • Partial staff compensation
  • Annual budget: $150,000–$500,000 (indicator)

Fuel Track (Building Momentum)

  • Governance board beyond founding stage
  • Clear strategic plan
  • Full staff compensation (all employees on payroll)
  • Annual budget: $500,000+ (indicator)

Across both tracks, we seek:

  • clear model of impact
  • A strong organizational “why”
  • Demonstrable community impact

03 Organizational Resilience

We prioritize resilient organizations with:

  • Mission-lived leadership rooted in lived experience
  • Community-driven approaches
  • Learning orientation and adaptability
  • Commitment to gender equity in programs and teams
  • Leadership development & succession planning
  • Strong governance systems with engaged boards
