About the Fellowship

The Vienna Center for Advanced Studies (ViCAS) invites applications for its Senior Fellowship Programme for the academic year 2026/27. ViCAS is a newly established interdisciplinary hub at the University of Vienna, dedicated to promoting international collaboration, academic excellence, and cross-generational intellectual dialogue across all fields of research.

Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and a leading European research institution. With a vibrant academic community of over 85,000 students and faculty from 120+ countries, it offers a rich environment for scholarly exchange and innovation across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and life sciences.

Fellowship Benefits

We offer up to ten Senior Fellowships annually to distinguished scholars who:

Are interested in interdisciplinary engagement
Have an outstanding academic record
Seek to contribute to the intellectual life of ViCAS and the broader University of Vienna

Each fellowship includes:

Stipend: €7,000/month
Accommodation allowance: €1,500/month
Family support: +€500/month per accompanying child under 18
Workspace: Fully equipped offices in central Vienna
Residency: Fellows are expected to live in Vienna for the full duration of the fellowship

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

Hold a professorial or equivalent senior academic position
Demonstrate a distinguished record of research and publication
Submit a compelling research proposal with potential to foster exchange and collaboration within the ViCAS community and across the University

Academic excellence
Originality of the proposed research
Contribution to ViCAS’s interdisciplinary mission
