WFP calls application for Communications Advocacy and Marketing Internship in Ottawa, Canada.

An internship at WFP is a great opportunity to acquire practical work experience while contributing to the goal of reaching Zero Hunger. Interns at WFP Canada gain profound insight into highly relevant political processes in the UN and in government entities. The assignment allows gaining a deep understanding of how humanitarian assistance in emergency contexts is implemented and how it is interconnected with long-term development cooperation.

Key Duties 

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the candidate on Communications Internship at WFP in Canada will perform the following duties:

  • Daily press and media monitoring
  • Translate articles, publish, edit, and also create stories to share over social media channels.
  • Provide input for both French and English WFP Canada social media channels, monitor statistics.
  • Support the organization of/ and WFP Canada’s representation at events.
  • Assist in drafting and writing publications as well as support advocacy and donor visibility efforts.
  • Work on brand building campaigns for the Canadian market.
  • Translate documents from French to English and vice versa.
  • Assist in arranging and preparing interviews and media briefings.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

In order to be eligible for this Communications Internship at WFP in Canada,

  • Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate studies completed, or recently graduated (within the past six months) OR have recently graduated in the last 6 months in Communication, Translation and Interpretation, Media, Social Sciences or related studies.
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.
  • Excellent command of both French and English; working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Requirements 

  • Ability to produce high-quality written materials, write clearly and concisely, and work within tight deadlines.
  • Experience in the fields of social media management, image processing such as Adobe Photoshop, Mailchimp, Eventbrite, content management systems, and writing for the web would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in French and English are necessary.
  • Understanding of Canadian values and bilingualism and also working knowledge of English and French (proficiency/level.

Benefits

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas, and related costs. But FP will reimburse travel tickets for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.

Learning Elements 

At the end of the assignment, the Intern will

  • Have a greater understanding of the World Food Programme’s work and its role within the wider humanitarian system.
  • Gain experience in the use of social media in brand building as well as contextualize communications materials for Canada, considering Canadian bilingualism and values.
  • Have an understanding of how to globalize marketing campaigns.
