The Centre for the Governance of AI (GovAI) is excited to announce the launch of the DC-based edition of our flagship Seasonal Fellowship Program, set to take place in either Fall 2025 or Winter 2026. This immersive, full-time, in-person opportunity is tailored for early- and mid-career professionals eager to shape the future of AI governance.
About GovAI
GovAI was founded to help decision-makers navigate the transition to a world shaped by advanced artificial intelligence. Since the release of our first research agenda in 2018, we’ve been at the forefront of defining the field of AI governance.
Our team and affiliates bring expertise across domains such as:
- National security and great power competition
- US-China relations
- Export control policy
- Corporate governance
- AI regulation in the US, UK, and EU
Our community includes alumni from:
- The White House OSTP, National Security Council, US Senate, Department of Commerce, and DHS
- Think tanks like CSIS, CSET, CNAS, and RAND
- AI leaders including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind
- Academic institutions like Yale, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, and George Washington University
- Global institutions like the UK AI Safety Institute and the EU AI Office
GovAI researchers contribute to top journals and conferences such as Science, FAccT, and NeurIPS, and frequently provide expert advice to key decision-makers in government, industry, and civil society.
About the Fellowship
GovAI’s Seasonal Fellowship is a three-month, full-time program where fellows independently conduct policy-relevant research on AI, guided by mentorship from leading experts.
What Fellows Can Expect:
- Personalized mentorship from GovAI researchers and affiliates
- Two-week onboarding to explore the AI policy landscape
- Tailored research projects with real-world policy impact, ranging from white papers and op-eds to peer-reviewed articles
- Skill-building workshops, seminars, and Q&A sessions with top AI policy practitioners
- Regular peer feedback through work-in-progress meetings
- Networking opportunities across the DC policy and AI governance ecosystem
Past fellows have explored diverse topics and have gone on to impactful careers in government, academia, leading think tanks, and frontier AI labs.
Fellowship Details
Timing
We are currently considering two fellowship periods:
- Fall 2025: September 15 – December 5
- Winter 2026: January 19 – April 10
Applicants will be asked to indicate their preference during the application process.
Location
The program is in-person and hosted at our Washington, DC office. Fellows will be provided with a dedicated workspace and weekday lunches.
Stipend
Fellows will receive a stipend of $18,000, with travel support available for relocating to DC.
Note: Only candidates who have the legal right to work in the US are eligible. Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor visas at this time.

Who Should Apply
We welcome candidates from a broad range of backgrounds and political perspectives. Applicants may come from government, academia, civil society, or the private sector. Disciplines of interest include (but are not limited to):

There are no formal degree requirements, but most successful applicants will have some combination of graduate education, research experience, or professional expertise related to AI policy.
Selection Criteria
We evaluate candidates based on:
- Quality of work: Clear writing, insightful reasoning, and fairness
- Relevant expertise: Skills or knowledge applicable to AI governance
- Judgment: Ability to assess the feasibility and importance of policy directions
- Team fit: Intellectual honesty, openness to feedback, and alignment with GovAI’s mission

The selection process consists of three stages:
- Written application
- Remote work test (brief, <30 minutes) in May
- Interviews in June
