Introduction and Background
Bank of Kigali was incorporated in the Republic of Rwanda on December 22nd 1966 as a joint venture between the Government of Rwanda and Belgolaise, the subsidiary of Fortis Bank.
The public private partnership involved the ownership of 50% of the ordinary share capital. The bank commenced its operations in 1967, serving as one of the then market leader in banking sector.
Following Fortis Bank strategy of withdrawing its operations in Africa in 2005, the Government of Rwanda acquired the Belgolaise share in 2007, thus increasing its direct and indirect shareholding in the Bank to 100%.
In compliance with revised laws relating to private companies in Rwanda, in 2011 the Bank changed its name from Bank of Kigali S.A to Bank of Kigali Limited and to BK Group PLC in 2017 with 3 subsidiary companies namely BK General Insurance, BK TecHouse and BK Capital.
Bank of Kigali’s growth over the last five decades is a true story of resilience, hard work and strong partnerships based on Rwandan values.

Considering that Data Center infrastructure is the heartbeat of any organization, BK intends to build a Tier 3 Data Center infrastructure that will have a modern facility/technology, built on the latest technology and measure up to best practices in the industry. The new infrastructure shall not only support the present computing demands, but it shall also, be capable of gracefully accommodating future and emerging computing requirements of Bank of Kigali Plc.
BK envisions that at the end of the investment period, the infrastructure would be projected into a state-of-the-art facility that is not only faster, but also highly available, disaster tolerant, and a safe place to store and run all the critical business applications of Bank of Kigali Plc.
The purpose of this project is, therefore, to set up new Data Centers that protect resources, optimize IT productivity and resource utilization, and support growth. The proposed architecture will help to align Data Center resources with BK’s business priorities.
The Data Center will help Bank of Kigali centralize control, consolidate and simplify management, increase security, gain operational efficiencies, reduce both total cost of ownership and operational costs, and speed application rollout as well as host external departments IT requirements. It will lay the foundation for emerging technologies with scalable and flexible designs.
