The Department of Economics at Ghent University invites applications for up to two doctoral fellowship positions, aimed at high-performing graduates who aspire to pursue a PhD in Economics. The fellowship is designed to support innovative research in one of the department’s key domains:

  • Banking & Finance
  • Environmental Economics
  • International Economics
  • Labour Economics and Welfare
  • Macroeconomics, Policy and Econometrics

The successful fellows will primarily focus on conducting original doctoral research, while also contributing to the teaching and academic support activities of the department.

Key Responsibilities

    • Devote the majority of time to academic research with the objective of completing a doctoral dissertation.
    • Support teaching activities within the department, including tutorials, grading, and potentially limited lecturing.
    • Supervise bachelor’s and master’s theses in relevant programmes.
    • Contribute to the academic and service-oriented duties within the department.

Profile of the Ideal Candidate

    • Holds a Master of Science in Economics or a closely related field, ranking in the top 20% of their graduating class. Degree requirements must be fulfilled by the start date.
    • An additional advanced or research master’s degree is considered an advantage.
    • Strong motivation for scientific research and pursuing a PhD.
    • Demonstrates excellent academic performance and communication skills.
    • Prior experience in teaching, research presentations, or conference participation is desirable.
    • For non-EEA applicants (including non-UK and non-Swiss), GRE or GMAT scores are mandatory (percentile rank required).
    • Applicants with degrees awarded outside the EU must submit a NARIC equivalence certificate.
    • Proficiency in Dutch is desirable, especially for those supporting undergraduate teaching.

  • full-time doctoral fellowship initially for 12 months, with the potential to extend to a total of 48 months based on performance evaluations.
  • competitive salary at 100% of the net income of a university assistant, adjusted for family circumstances and seniority. This fellowship is tax-free under Belgian law.

      • Academic background,
      • Grades (transcript),

  1. GRE or GMAT scores (for applicants from outside the EEA, Switzerland, or UK).
  2. NARIC equivalence certificate (for diplomas from outside the EU).

In addition, candidates must complete this Online Information Form, summarizing key personal and academic details.
