Applications are officially open for the 2025/2026 DAAD In-Country/In-Region Master’s and PhD Scholarship Programme. This initiative is designed to strengthen higher  education systems across Sub-Saharan Africa, equipping them to play a pivotal role in promoting sustainable development. The scholarship provides funding for advanced academic pursuits at the Master’s and doctoral levels, particularly for individuals aiming to build careers in  teaching or research within higher education institutions in the region. While the primary focus is on university staff, the programme also considers the broader demand for highly skilled professionals in the public sector.

The opportunity targets individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa who hold an undergraduate degree and wish to pursue a Master’s programme, or those with a Master’s qualification seeking to undertake doctoral studies. Candidates can apply to study in their own country under the In-Country scheme or opt for the In-Region scheme, which supports studies in another Sub-Saharan African nation. Special consideration is given to female applicants and individuals from underrepresented communities, with the goal of fostering inclusive access to higher education.

Applicants from South Africa should be aware that In-Country scholarships in their country are managed through a separate partnership between DAAD and NRF, with distinct application procedures and deadlines.

The scholarship covers the standard duration of academic programmes — typically up to two years for Master’s degrees and a maximum of three years for PhD studies. Recipients benefit from a monthly stipend, research and study-related allowances, tuition fees, and assistance with publishing theses. Those studying in another country under the In-Region scheme also receive health insurance and travel allowances.
