The Great Lakes Local News Fellowship is a new program under the Knight-Wallace Fellowships at the University of Michigan, designed to revitalize and strengthen locally focused journalism across the Great Lakes region. The fellowship offers selected journalists or journalism strategists the chance to spend eight months in Ann Arbor, developing or reimagining community-focused journalism projects that serve audiences in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Program Benefits

Selected fellows will receive an $85,000 stipend for the eight-month fellowship period, plus $5,000 for relocation expenses. The fellowship also covers health insurance and provides access to university courses, professional workshops, and individualized project support. Fellows will join the broader Knight-Wallace cohort and benefit from expert mentorship, entrepreneurial training, and access to the University of Michigan’s academic and professional resources. Participants will also receive post-fellowship consulting to help sustain their projects after completion.

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to U.S. journalists and journalism strategists who live or work in one of the Great Lakes states: — Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, or Wisconsin. Applicants should have at least five years of professional experience and a proven commitment to strengthening local journalism. Candidates are expected to propose a specific project that focuses on building, growing, or reimagining local news in their community. A strong connection to the region and a clear plan to continue their work beyond the fellowship period are essential.
