The United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa (the Centre), established in Yaoundé, Cameroon, was created at the request of the member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States ( ECCAS) and the decision of the UN General Assembly by the resolutions of December 5, 1998 (53/78) and December 1, 1999 (54/55).

The Center is the Central Africa Regional Office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) with a mandate to promote and protect human rights and democracy in 10 Central African countries. namely (Burundi, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad). The role of the Center in the countries it covers is to ensure the effectiveness of human rights and democracy through capacity building, advocacy, lobbying, dialogue, prevention of human rights violations human rights monitoring, technical assistance and advisory services provided to all human rights actors, including governments,

The Center offers fellowships for a maximum of six months, intended for graduate students, young practitioners and human rights defenders holding a degree in a field related to the activities of the Center, in particular human rights. , gender, democracy, documentation, communication and advocacy as well as administration and finance. This call for applications concerns the gender component.

 

Under the direction of the Regional Representative of the United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa and the direct supervision of the Head of the Equality and Non-Discrimination Unit, the fellow will have to carry out the tasks following:

  • Contribute to the collection and analysis of information on human rights and particularly women’s rights in the countries covered by the Centre;
  • Contribute to the preparation and implementation of the Centre’s activities in order to ensure the integration of the gender approach in all stages of the conduct of activities;
  • Provide practical support in the organization of conferences, workshops or seminars of the Center relating to gender and women’s rights;
  • Support the research of tools and techniques on gender and propose a better strategy for CARO through its programs to strengthen the Human Rights of women and girls;
  • Provide support in the preparation of meetings with the Centre’s partners working in the field of gender and women’s rights;
  •  Conduct background research and analysis on the situation
    of women’s human rights in Central Africa;
  • Support research on the status of ratifications and implementation of conventions, protocols and other texts relating to human and gender rights;
  • Support the implementation of the recommendations of the CNUDHD-CA conferences, workshops or seminars relating to women’s rights and gender;
  • Support the participation of the CNUDHD-AC in the various activities organized by other structures;
  • Participate and ensure, as necessary, the inclusion of the gender dimension in monitoring and reporting activities on the human rights situation in the countries covered; analyze trends and women’s rights issues and make proposals for action to address emerging challenges;
  •  Implement any task allowing the proper functioning of the Center, at the request of the Regional Representative or the Head of the Equality and Non-Discrimination Unit.

  • Be enrolled at least in a bachelor’s degree or have obtained a bachelor’s degree in law, human rights, political science or international relations, or in another related field, a specialization in women’s rights and gender issues would be an asset;
  • Professional experience in human rights and gender would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of and/or interest in issues affecting generally marginalized groups;
  • Good writing, research, analysis and synthesis skills;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure;
  • Great adaptability and flexibility in the implementation of multiple and varied tasks;
  • Perfect oral and written command of French or English, and working knowledge of the other language;
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet.
