Details

Artificial intelligence is transforming how we live, work, and interact with the world. Yet despite being among the most digitally connected generations, young people are often left out of the decisions that will define how AI shapes society. Gen(Z)AI seeks to change that.

Gen(Z)AI is a Canadian initiative designed to bring 100 youth (ages 17–23) into national forums to learn, deliberate, and co-create policy ideas around AI. These forums aim to ensure youth voices are front and center — not an afterthought — as Canada develops its AI strategy.

Program Structure: From Regions to National ‌Deliberation

Over six months, participants will convene in four regional forums across Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, and Vancouver. Each forum tackles a distinct AI policy topic:

  • Montreal: AI & Information Integrity
  • Halifax: AI & Age Assurance
  • Toronto: AI & Chatbots
  • Vancouver: AI & Data Privacy

Each forum spans three days. The first day is virtual (expert learning), the second is an in-person deliberative session of a regional sub-group, and the third is hybrid (in-person + virtual).

Finally, a national plenary session in Ottawa will bring together delegates to present collective recommendations to policymakers, public servants, and political leaders.

 Participation, Selection & Logistics

  • Eligibility: Canadian youth aged 17–23, living in Canada
  • Application Window: October 1–17, 2025
  • Selection Method: Diversity-aware lottery to reflect Canada’s demographic profile
  • Commitment: Attend all four forums (some virtually, some in person) and the final plenary
  • Stipends & Support: Travel stipends available for those living outside host cities; food, merch, and local logistics covered during in-person forums
  • Voluntary Role: This is not a paid role, but participants’ names will be recognized in regional and national reports

 Why Gen(Z)AI Matters

  • It gives youth direct access to policymaking and AI governance, rather than passive consultation
  • It builds AI literacy, blending expert learning with youth perspectives
  • It seeks to generate policy innovation rooted in lived experience, especially on fairness, privacy, trust, and rights
  • It fosters citizen engagement and accountability, ensuring people most affected by AI help shape it
