Huduma Fellowship 2021 for Emerging Public Sector Leaders in Uganda: (Deadline 30 May 2021)

Applications for the Huduma Fellowship 2021 are now open. The Hudima (Swahili for Public Service) Fellowship is an initiative by the LéO Africa Institute and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, to provide thought leadership training for emerging public sector leaders in Uganda.

Every year, the programme will enrol 15 outstanding young and emerging leaders, who already work in public service or aspire to do so. These leaders from multidisciplinary backgrounds will undertake a year-long training on various aspects of leadership, public affairs management, and policy making. The programme will offer the fellows an opportunity to learn ideals of “servant” leadership, offer networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the public sector in Uganda to aid fellows’ growth as conscious public sector leaders.

The Huduma Fellowship is modelled on the Institute’s other successful fellowship programme, the Young and Emerging Leaders’ Project (YELP), which annually inducts outstanding young and emerging leaders who are committed to achieving success and living high-impact lives. Huduma Fellows will undertake some of the previously designed modules and seminars on personal leadership and critical thinking from the YELP programme.

Fellowship Structure

The Huduma fellowship is structured along a series of 2 seminars and 2 workshops in between which Fellows will spend time at their work places with occasional interface with the members of the faculty as they continue to learn and apply the knowledge and skills acquired.

Fellows from outside Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies will be placed at any of the said departments for their practical sessions and learning the working of public service. Feedback from these placements and time spent at work will be brought back to the online sessions, workshops and seminars to enhance learning and experience sharing.

Eligibility

  • Open to individuals between the ages of 25-35 who have demonstrable interest in volunteerism and public service.
  • The fellows will be early stage professionals working in the public sector in Uganda who are intellectually curious and are interested in public affairs.
  • The fellowship is also open to individuals with a demonstrable interest in public affairs.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment of potential Fellows will be carried out at two levels:

  • Each individual application will be assessed against a selected set of indicators. You will be required to be honest in your application in order to give members of the Selection Committee a fair understanding of who you are.
  • The second stage of this assessment will be through a conversation with a member of the Institute faculty. At this stage, shortlisted candidates will have an opportunity to discuss in detail their career plans and experience in the public sector. The assessment will provide additional information that may have not been availed during the application stage. At this stage, the candidate will discuss with a faculty member their expectations from the Fellowship which will be assessed at the end of the programme.

Application

The deadline for applications is May 30, 2021. Late applications will not be considered.
