Job description
The Digital Transformation Center Rwanda (DigiCenter) promotes digital transformation in Rwanda and is an important bridge between the public and the private sector, academia and civil society. The center is funded and run by GIZ’ Digital Solutions for Sustainable Development Program. The Digital Transformation Center supports the Ministry of ICT & Innovation (MINICT) and its implementing organization, the Rwanda Information Society Agency (RISA), in building capacity to promote digital transformation in Rwanda. At the same time, the DigiCenter endorses its partners in developing and implementing digital solutions which address social challenges. From 2019 to 2022 alone, 18 digital solutions were developed and over 650 people received training on topics such as internet of things, machine learning and project management. More than 90 community events took place with roughly 4,000 participants. One of the focus areas of the Digital Transformation Center is Artificial Intelligence (AI). It contributes to sustainable and open approaches to AI in Rwanda and at the regional level. This includes skills and capacity building, creating and opening up AI training data, and developing policy frameworks to promote AI adoption in Rwanda. A specific objective is to make AI solutions available for the Rwandan population in Kinyarwanda. Therefore, the Digital Transformation Center contributes to creating AI training data sets and piloting AI-based solutions in the areas of natural language processing (e.g. voice assistants) and machine translation as well as computer vision.
Your tasks
During your internship you will support the following tasks:
- Support with the creation of AI training datasets and the development of AI use cases in Rwanda with a focus on machine translation and computer vision
- Support with the development and implementation of capacity building measures and training in AI
- Support with the organization and implementation of physical and virtual community events (e.g. meet ups) and workshops at the Digital Transformation Center
- Support with the creation and management of communities of practice, e.g. on Natural Language Processing and others, where deemed necessary.
- Support the communications team in the creation of communication products (fact sheets, presentations, social media posts, GIZ-internal info formats)
- Support knowledge management and proper documentation of processes, research and analyses
Your profile
- You are studying in the third semester or higher in public policy, economics, communications, or another relevant field of study.
- Passionate about strengthening digital and AI ecosystems in the Global South.
- Ideally, first experiences with international development cooperation. Experiences in Sub-Saharan Africa are an advantage.
- Experience with event management and communications, including social media.
- Ability to quickly integrate into a multi-cultural team and to manage processes independently.
- Interest in and basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence and subtopics such as Natural Language Processing, Machine Translation, and computer vision are an asset.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of partners from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector will be required.
- Excellent English skills. German skills are an advantage.

We pay a monthly stipend of €1.689,- (gross). Depending on the country of assignment a monthly expatriation allowance (gross), predetermined by GIZ will be paid on top.
