Job Title: Teaching Assistantship Mentors
Department: Programs
Reports to: Country Director, Deputy Country Director- Programs, Project Coordinator

CONTEXT

Inspire, Educate and Empower Rwanda (IEE) is a Rwandan local NGO that builds alliances with schools and communities, helping to sustain triumphs of the times while designing and delivering innovative programs to address challenges to provision of quality education. Since 2005, in collaboration with partners, IEE has complemented efforts of the Ministry of Education/ Rwanda Education Board, contributing to educational implementation.

Funded by MasterCard Foundation, IEE will be piloting the Teaching Assistantships Project in Rwanda, providing opportunities for bright young women with an interest in teaching and education to gain experience in the teaching profession and in secondary education. This will provide the Teaching Assistants with exposure to work in the classroom, will spark a passion for education as a career pathway or area of further academic study and will provide additional support to teachers.

 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

 

Teaching Assistantship Mentors will be responsible for implementation of project activities in support of Teaching Assistants. Using a mentorship approach, Teaching Assistantship Mentors will provide school-based day-to-day technical support and guidance to Teaching Assistants, in addition to facilitating on-going Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities.

TARGET APPLICANTS FOR THE ROLE

IEE seeks qualified female candidates to apply for the role of Teaching Assistantship Mentors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key accountabilities

Facilitate Teaching Assistants’ understanding of career preparation in their transitional year to higher learning.
Facilitate Teaching Assistants’ understanding of English language for teaching.
Facilitate Teaching Assistants’ understanding of planning for teaching and methodology.
Facilitate Teaching Assistants’ understanding of study strategies and personal development.
Provide moral support to Teaching Assistants to be determined to strive against any obstacles, in determination to succeed professionally.
Provide moral and technical support to Teaching Assistants, interesting them to join the teaching career.
Provide moral support to Teaching Assistants for empowerment, participation and decision-making.
Support Teaching Assistants as they facilitate peer support sessions with their peers.
Mentorship for Teaching Assistants to collaborate with host teachers to facilitate mathematics and science classes.
Mentorship for Teaching Assistants to develop skills, values and attitudes for effective knowledge searching and sharing.
Facilitating Teaching Assistants’ appreciation of requisites for quality learning.
Facilitate Teaching Assistants’ understanding of the main domains of CPD: Professional Knowledge, Professional practice and Professional ethics, values and behaviours in support of quality teaching and learning.
Build pedagogical skills of Teaching Assistants as effective facilitators of teaching and learning.
Equip Teaching Assistants with knowledge and skills for preparation for and facilitation of teaching and learning.
Support Teaching Assistants’ work with teachers to ensure they:

Know and effectively support learners and the learning process.
Know subject and curriculum content and appropriate ways to teach it.
Plan and teach effectively, and set high expectations for learner achievement.
Assess to improve learning and teaching.
Create and sustain an inclusive, learner-friendly learning environment.
Engage in school-based professional development.
Establish professional relationships with the community to support student learning.
Undertake any other project implementation roles and activities as may be requested by IEE Management.




PERSON SPECIFICATION

 

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:

Minimum of a Bachelors’ Degree in Education with at least of 3 years continuous experience in education delivery, education monitoring, capacity building in education and mentorship.
Master’s Degree in education is an added advantage.
Demonstrable skills and experience in teaching.
Strong professional mentorship experience including planning, initiating and delivering activities within agreed time scales.
Demonstrable experience in curriculum development and delivery.
Specialty in STEM, particularly mathematics and science is added advantage.
Understanding and experience of school-based mentorship, Training of Trainers and capacity building is an advantage.
Demonstrable experience in program Monitoring, Evaluation and reporting is an advantage.
Good presenter with experience of presenting complex ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Experience of working in the NGO sector in education is an advantage.
Work Based Skills and Competencies:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kinyarwanda.
Able to analyse teaching data and convert it to reportable formats.
Ability to clearly accurately articulate complex information to a wide range of audiences.
Cognitive flexibility, professional curiosity and initiative, and interpersonal sensitivity as a member and builder of CPD teams.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrable mentorship experience.
Ability to enthuse and engage a diverse range of stakeholders internally and externally.
Agent of change, knowledgeable about personality and power dynamics, community issues continually identifying the best ways to move forward.
Time management skills, task management skills, and organizational skills. The ability to meet deadlines is essential.
Able to work flexibly as part of a small team and to work independently.

Length of contract: 12 months (with possibility of extension)
Location: Rural areas of Rwanda around schools of intervention.
Travel involved: This post requires frequent travel to Kigali.

The Teaching Assistantships Project Coordinator will provide technical oversight to all project activities as well as building capacity and supervising the Communications Associate and Teaching Assistantship Mentors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key accountabilities

Responsible for overall day-to-day project management, initiating and coordinating all project activities for effective delivery of the project.
Synthesize project information to guide effective implementation, and producing highly focused project implementation update reports taking into consideration, contextual, policy and logistics related to project implementation.
Develop, implement and monitor the detailed project plan.
Plan and implement consultation and capacity building activities and meetings with education stakeholders at national and local levels.
Keep abreast of education policy developments and undertake desk reviews as required.
Collaborate with the Communications Associate and Country Directorate to generate project information both for media sharing and for reporting.
Draft project information sheets and reports.
Collaborate with other Programme Managers as required.
Undertake any other project management and coordination related activities as may be requested by IEE Management.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Experience:

Minimum of a Bachelors’ Degree in Education with at least 5 years continuous experience in education delivery, education monitoring, capacity building in education and mentorship.
Master’s Degree in education is an added advantage.
Demonstrable skills and experience in project leadership, producing policy papers or equivalent with a proven ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise reports.
Strong project management experience including planning, initiating and delivering new initiatives within agreed time scales.
Demonstrable skills and experience in securing involvement of internal and external stakeholders, planning and facilitating consultation exercises, interviews or fact-finding meetings which result in all relevant information being collected within a limited timeframe.
Demonstrable teaching experience, contributing to quality learning.
Understanding of STEM, particularly mathematics and science is added advantage.
A broad understanding of school-based mentorship, Training of Trainers and capacity building is an advantage.
Demonstrable experience in program Monitoring, Evaluation and reporting.
Good presenter with experience of presenting complex ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

The Communications Associate will manage, undertake, assist and contribute to high profile communication about the Teaching Assistantships Project in conjunction with various project colleagues at IEE.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Key accountabilities

Develop and manage the detailed project communications plan, in alignment with IEE’s overall communications plan.
Write and post profile content and Human-Interest Stories that highlight project activities, featuring stakeholders’ interaction and experiences with the project.
Manage IEE’s online presence by updating, revising, and developing its website resources and by developing social media content.
Post IEE’s communications on varied channels including print media, social media, and website.
Contribute to IEE reports and general communications to help promote the Teaching Assistantships Project to both internal and external audiences.
Provide feedback to IEE managers and staff on observed colleague performance when staff are assisting with tasks related to this position’s areas of responsibility.
Contribute to overall content development related to the Teaching Assistantships Project.
Provide communication support to overall day-to-day project management related to all project activities for effective delivery of the project.
Synthesize project information to lead on effective communication on the project, supporting implementation, and producing highly focused project implementation update reports taking into consideration, contextual, policy and logistics related to project implementation.
Plan and implement information gathering activities with education stakeholders at national and local levels, for empirical communication on the project.
Keep abreast of communication trends and adopt them for effective communication on the project.
Collaborate with the Country Director, Deputy Country Director- Programs, and Project Coordinator to generate project information both for media sharing and for reporting.
Support drafting of project information sheets and reports.
Collaborate with other IEE staff members as required.
Undertake any other project communication roles and activities as may be requested by IEE Management.

 



 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience:

 

Minimum of a Bachelors’ Degree in Education with specialization in English Language and Literature, English language linguistics, communications, Professional Writing, Public Relations, or other relevant discipline.
Master’s Degree in any of the above fields is an added advantage.
At least three years of experience in a writing or communications role.
Work Based Skills and Competencies:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Kinyarwanda.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, editing skills, and interviewing skills. The role requires a high degree of facility in writing for different audiences (IEE staff, Teaching Assistants, senior administrators, students) and for different media (website, social media, annual report, brochures).
Experience in narrative, analytical writing from a range of perspectives.
Demonstrable skills in writing Human Interest Stories is an added advantage.
Deep knowledge of issues pertaining to education, teaching and learning, along with awareness of various disciplinary instructional practices and career pathways. Experience in teaching is considered an asset.
Demonstrable skills and experience in project communications, producing communications papers or equivalent with a proven ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise reports.
Good presenter with experience of presenting complex ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Ability to clearly accurately articulate complex information to a wide range of audiences.
