GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASK(S) AND OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED
Within the framework of the FAO Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Disease Operations (ECTAD), under the overall supervision of the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO)/Chief, Animal Health Service (AGAH), the functional and administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in Ethiopia and the technical supervision and backstopping of the Regional Manager of ECTAD in Eastern Africa and the direct supervision of the FAO Rwanda, the incumbent will undertake the following duties and responsibilities:
Liaise with the government departments in charge of animal production and health in the country to
Briefly describe the poultry sector (broilers, layers, indigenous chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and other birds) in the country. A compendium to aid summarizing of the data will be provided. Literature review is critical at this point.
List the major live bird markets and slaughterhouse in each region in the country- specify the nearest trading centre or location within a town or City.
Select 10 major live bird markets within Kigali and its environs
Collect market characteristics data as guided by electronic live bird market profiling application tool to be provided by FAO.
Submit the data to FAO for analysis and report writing.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Brief description of the poultry sector and list of major live bird markets In the country
Market characteristics data uploaded in the electronic live bird markets profiling application.
University Degree in animal production /animal science/animal health/range management
Postgraduate training and relevant experience in farming systems and livestock value chain analysis as a basis of designing development programmes and mitigation of negative impacts
Working knowledge of poultry sector in Rwanda
Good skills in design of cross-sectional surveys, data collection methodologies and analytical skills such as use of statistical software
Systematic document review and analysis
Structuring and drafting skills to make information accessible and meaningful to expected users.
