Keele University has launched the Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) Programme, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, to support the next generation of researchers committed to solving contemporary rural challenges in the UK and beyond. This innovative and inclusive programme offers a unique Masters Plus PhD opportunity, with a particular emphasis on increasing access for under-represented groups.
The SURF Programme will support interdisciplinary research on key rural issues, including but not limited to sustainability, inequality, agriculture, youth engagement, digital inclusion, and climate resilience in rural settings. Scholars will receive full financial support to complete a Master’s degree at Keele in the first year, followed by a fully funded four-year PhD.
About the SURF Programme
The Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) Programme is a prestigious initiative that aims to develop new knowledge and innovative solutions for rural development in the UK. Who Can Apply?

The programme is open to applicants from any relevant disciplinary background—including but not limited to sociology, geography, environmental studies, anthropology, public health, education, and political science.
Applicants are expected to propose their own PhD project, and the selection panel is especially interested in projects focusing on rural youth, though all topics relevant to rural futures will be considered.
Programme Structure

- Year 1: Taught Master’s degree at Keele University in a relevant discipline
- Years 2–5: PhD study under the SURF programme
- Support includes:
- Full tuition for both Master’s and PhD
