Opportunity Description

The Lewis Scholarship, which was established in 2023, offers free housing and a monthly stipend to student journalists of color who are interning at news media outlets in Washington, D.C.

This $10,000 scholarship is given to one undergraduate student journalist of color each fall, spring, and summer semester. The scholarship will provide a $1,000 monthly stipend as well as free housing through Washington Intern Student Housing for the duration of the student’s internship, which is typically four months.

Benefits:

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to qualify, candidates must:

  • To be eligible for this scholarship, students do not need to be citizens of the United States, but they must be enrolled in an authorized American college or university.
  • Be a current, enrolled, undergraduate student of color in your third or fourth year of college, and at least eighteen years old. (Seniors who are graduating may apply for this scholarship if their internship occurs in the semester right after graduation.)
  • While they are in Washington, D.C., be enrolled in online classes at their college or university. Scholarship recipients and recent graduates are not required to enroll during the summer.
  • Possess a grade-point average of at least 3.0.
  • Independently arrange to work as a journalist in Washington, D.C. for a semester during which they would be awarded the scholarship. (Instead of waiting to apply for an internship after receiving notification of it, they strongly advise applicants to submit their materials for the Lewis Scholarship concurrently with their internship applications. As part of their evaluation, institute personnel will confirm the applicant’s status as an intern.
  • Send a confirmation email or letter of acceptance indicating that they have landed a paid on-the-job journalism internship in Washington, D.C. for the semester they will be receiving the scholarship. At the time of application, this is not required.
  • Make a plan to become a journalist.

Documents Requirement:

An application that is complete includes:

  • A 500-word essay in response to the following prompt: How will you demonstrate diversity, equity, and inclusion in journalism in your work as a journalist? What do you think these terms mean to you? This essay is where applicants must outline their career goals. Please note that the contents of any essay may be posted, crediting their partners, on their websites.
  • Connections to three published examples of journalistic work. These ought to be active URLs that aren’t protected by a paywall.
  • Three recommendation letters, not from family members, from people who are aware of your work ethic, academic standing, and/or career interests.
  • A succinct declaration of one’s need for money.
  • Your most recent academic record.
  • Your CV.
  • A confirmation letter or email indicating that you have been accepted for a summer 2024 on-the-job journalism internship in Washington, D.C. (Note: They understand that you might not have this when you submit your Lewis Scholarship application. That’s alright; they will contact you again when your application is processed.
