The Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness, based at the University of Melbourne, is pleased to invite applications for its 2026 Visiting Fellowship Scheme. This prestigious opportunity is designed to support scholars, practitioners, and educators working to address the pressing global issue of statelessness. Through this program, the Centre aims to foster critical research, strengthen international collaboration, and deepen its global engagement on statelessness.
A Platform for Research and Collaboration
The Visiting Fellowship Scheme offers an invaluable opportunity for individuals engaged in the field of statelessness to contribute to and benefit from the Centre’s vibrant intellectual and policy community. Fellows will have access to academic resources, opportunities to present their work, and a space to further develop their ideas and collaborations with other experts.
The scheme is open to individuals from any discipline or professional background who are conducting or planning research that is aligned with the Centre’s mission. Applicants with lived experience of statelessness, and those based in underrepresented regions, are strongly encouraged to apply.
Funded Visiting Fellowship
For the 2026 cycle, the Centre will offer one fully funded Visiting Research Fellowship to a researcher, practitioner, or educator working in the field of statelessness. The fellowship includes:

Funding of up to AUD $6,000 to cover international travel and accommodation costs

Duration: Up to two months

Location: University of Melbourne, Australia
Study abroad programs -
Period: Fellowship must be undertaken between July and November 2026

Access to a workspace, library, and computing resources
Expectations
During their time at the Centre, Visiting Fellows are expected to:

Participate fully in the Centre’s scholarly life, including attending events and contributing to workshops

Present their research in a public or faculty seminar or work-in-progress meeting

Contribute a blog post to the Centre’s Critical Statelessness Studies blog, where appropriate
This immersive engagement ensures that fellows not only benefit from the resources of the Centre but also actively shape its academic and public dialogue.
Application Guidelines
Applications for the funded Visiting Fellowship must be submitted by 30 November 2025 and should be sent via email to law-statelessness@unimelb.edu.au with the subject line: Visiting Fellowship Application.
Each application must include the following documents, combined in a single PDF:

A curriculum vitae and list of publications

A research plan (maximum 1000 words) describing:

The research topic and its relevance to statelessness

The proposed activities and collaboration during the fellowship

The anticipated contribution to the work of the Centre

Proposed dates for the visit

A budget with a breakdown of the requested fellowship amount (up to AUD $6,000), including travel costs

One letter of reference (non-academic applicants may submit a letter of support from an employer or affiliated organization)
Note: Fellows from outside Australia are responsible for arranging and funding their own visas and health/travel insurance.
Self-Funded Visiting Opportunities
In addition to the funded fellowship, the Centre welcomes applications from self-funded visitors year-round. These visitors will receive the same institutional support—workspace (subject to availability), library, and computing access—and are encouraged to actively participate in Centre activities.
