The Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position focused on investigating grain boundary effects in 2D materials, in partnership with Intel. The project aims to advance the understanding and performance of TMD-based devices for next-generation semiconductor technologies.

Applicants must hold at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field, with a strong interest in nanoelectronics and 2D materials. A first-class honours or a relevant Master’s degree is desirable. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, be self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in English is required as per UCC regulations.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for a PhD program focusing on 2D materials and device engineering within the Tyndall National Institute

  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must:

    • Hold an undergraduate degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, or a related field

    • Have achieved at least a 2:1 (upper second-class honours) or higher

    • Be highly self-motivated with a strong desire to learn

    • Possess excellent scientific writing and communication skills

    • Be flexible and capable of working as part of a team

    • Demonstrate initiative and interest in nanoelectronics and 2D materials

Desirable Criteria:

  • First-class honours (1:1) in the undergraduate degree

  • A Master’s degree in a related field

  • Experience with electron-beam lithography (EBL), TMD-based device fabrication, or transfer of grown 2D films

  • Understanding of carrier transport physics in TMDs
