
Call for Applications: PhD Scholarships at Rwanda Biomedical Center (TRIBE-Hub)
The Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC), in collaboration with the European Union under the Team Europe initiative, is pleased to announce a call for applications for PhD scholarships as part of the “Transforming Rwanda Biomedical Center into a Center of Excellence (TRIBE-Hub)” program. This initiative aims to strengthen public health research, data analytics, and workforce development in Rwanda and across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Program Overview
The TRIBE-Hub program is a three-year grant (2025–2028) designed to enhance RBC’s capacity as a National Public Health Institute (NPHI). The program focuses on:
- Building core public health functions.
- Strengthening digital health, data, and analytics capabilities.
Selected candidates will pursue PhD studies at African or European universities in collaboration with RBC, contributing to Rwanda’s health sector through research, innovation, and policy development.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be Rwandan citizens residing in Rwanda.
- Commit to working in Rwanda’s health sector during and for at least three years after graduation.
- Hold a Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Data Sciences, Health Sciences, or related fields.
- Meet the admission requirements of the chosen PhD-awarding university.
- Be no older than 45 years at the time of application.
- Women and candidates with confirmed PhD admissions in the listed fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Requirements
Interested candidates must submit the following documents to dg@rbc.gov.rw with the subject line: “APPLICATION FOR PhD – TRIBE HUB” by July 31, 2025, at 00:00 AM:
- Motivation letter (aligning PhD research interests with university admission requirements).
- Certified copies of academic transcripts (from baccalaureate to master’s level).
- Certified copies of bachelor’s and master’s diplomas.
- Three recommendation letters (from at least Associate Professors).
- Certified copy of the birth certificate.
- Updated CV, including a list of publications (if applicable) and justification for any gaps in the academic/professional trajectory.
Duration of Study
The PhD program will last up to three years, with a possible 6-month extension under exceptional circumstances. Studies commence upon securing admission.
