Princeton in Africa is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Princeton, NJ. We offer yearlong fellowships to recent college graduates with organizations across Africa, fostering meaningful contributions to Africa’s well-being and cultivating global relationships.

Program Snapshot

  • 50 Fellows annually

  • 30+ host organizations

  • 15–18 countries

  • Diverse sectors: public health, humanitarian aid, education, youth capacity building, agricultural development, and more

  • Affiliated with Princeton University but independently funded

Position Overview
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for:

  • Overseeing Fellow health and safety

  • Managing finances and organizational operations

  • Leading fundraising and communications

  • Reporting to and engaging with the Board

Team Structure

  • Reports to: Board of Directors

  • Supervises: Deputy Director, fundraising and communications team

Purpose
Seeking a dynamic leader to strengthen our fellowship program and create new opportunities across Africa, aligning with trends in development and philanthropy.

Essential Functions

Management

  • Set organizational goals and strategies for sustainability and growth

  • Lead the team in achieving objectives and responding to challenges

  • Oversee Fellow safety and financial stability

Fellowship & Alumni Programming

  • Lead fellowship programs, including the Nexus Program

  • Build host organization relationships and conduct site visits

  • Organize Fellow events (orientation, midyear retreat)

  • Support alumni engagement initiatives

Development & Communications

  • Set and achieve fundraising goals from diverse sources

  • Lead donor cultivation, database management, and reporting

  • Oversee benefit events and communications strategy

  • Serve as spokesperson for PiAf

Board Engagement & Governance

  • Leverage board expertise for strategic guidance and fundraising

  • Coordinate meetings, retreats, and committee activities

  • Support board recruitment and governance activities

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

  • 5–10 years in international fellowship/education programs (3–5 in management)

  • Strong fundraising and board management skills

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills

  • Experience in nonprofit budgeting and Microsoft Office

  • Willingness to travel to Africa and work flexible hours

  • QuickBooks/CRM knowledge a plus

Fall 2025 Internship Opportunities

International internships

All internships offer:

  • Fully remote or hybrid (Princeton, NJ office)

  • $150/month stipend (~$450 for 3 months)

  • 10–15 hours/week (students only; no full-time jobs alongside)

  • Applications due: Thursday, August 14th (rolling review—apply early)

  • Must be fully authorized to work in the US

Programs Intern

Purpose: Provide programmatic, administrative, and development support.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Current student or recent graduate (international relations, African studies, nonprofit management preferred)

  • Strong writing, research, organizational skills

  • G-Suite and Canva skills a plus

  • Interest in nonprofit operations and African development

Fellowship Program Support

  • Assist with Fellows Retreat and application process

  • Support virtual programming

  • Manage Fellow reports and databases

  • Special project contributions (research, marketing, fundraising)

Programs & Operations Intern

Purpose: Support both programmatic and operational functions.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Same as Programs Intern, plus:

  • Strong administrative and office support capabilities

Fellowship Program Support

  • Similar to Programs Intern role

Administrative Support

  • Data entry into CRM

  • Assist with mailings, supplies, and logistics

  • Prepare slide decks for board meetings

  • Draft stakeholder emails

Communications & Development Intern

Purpose: Support development and communications strategy.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Current student or graduate (international relations, communications, nonprofit management preferred)

  • Strong writing, research, and design skills

  • Canva, G-Suite, WordPress experience a plus

  • Outgoing personality and cross-cultural communication skills

Development & External Relations Support

  • Create recruiting materials and manage social media

  • Maintain donor databases

  • Assist with website updates and event planning

  • Research funding opportunities
